Position Description
The Department of Psychiatry, in partnership with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI), Cumming School of Medicine University of Calgary, invite applications for a research position (Tenure Track) in neurostimulation in Children and Adolescents. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.
The successful candidate will establish an active research program that focuses on novel approaches to non-invasive neurostimulation (rTMS, tDCS/tACS, focused ultrasound, etc) during the unique developmental periods defined by childhood and adolescence. They will lead an innovative clinical research program working with researchers who study mechanisms, safety, and potential therapeutic effects using non-invasive neurostimulation in children and adolescents with a focus on psychiatric and/or neurodevelopmental disorders.
Qualifications include a PhD and 2 years of post-doctoral training with a focus on neurostimulation and its intersection with neuroimaging, neurophysiology, cognitive/emotional/social function, and/or clinical trial design. At the Assistant Professor level, the successful candidate will have a successful track record of leading peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognized journals. At the Associate Professor level, the successful candidate must also have a track record of obtaining independent research funding resulting in publications in leading international journals. At both levels, the successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to collaborate, ability to lead a research team, and teaching excellence.
The position provides 80% protected time for research and will include expectations to contribute to teaching and administrative service.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to be part of a prolific and diverse research environment in the HBI, ACHRI and the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research & Education, with access to state-of-the-art core infrastructure. Moreover, the successful applicant will benefit from the recently completed Child and Youth Mental Health Centre, a bench to bedside clinical research facility. Outstanding opportunities for collaboration are available with established research programs in diverse areas of neuroscience, imaging, informatics and neurostimulation therapies.
The Mathison Centre, created in 2012, brings together 60 investigators from six faculties across the University of Calgary and provides an enriched environment for mental health research and the training of students and fellows at the university’s Cumming School of Medicine. The candidates research program will support the Mathison Centre in realizing its vision of being a leading international mental health research centre with expertise in the early identification and treatment of psychiatric illness. The candidate will also have opportunity to work closely with the Owerko Centre, a multidisciplinary research hub with a broad translational focus on neurodevelopment, child mental health, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Researchers in the Owerko Centre advance knowledge about brain development and child mental health, from the cellular level to public policy, drawing upon a wide spectrum of research method. It is embedded in ACHRI, an institute devoted to child health research in a wide spectrum of disciplines – all focused on better lifelong health and well-being for children, families and communities.ACHRI supports excellence in research, education and knowledge translation to improve the lifelong health and well-being of children and families. ACHRI’s 400 diverse members share a passion for child health and wellness - making discoveries to design new treatments, advance practices, and shape policies to improve child health outcomes.
