Position Overview

The Department of Cardiac Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Registered Nurse. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 11 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Registered Nurse (RN) reports to the Principal Investigator leading clinical research such as randomized trials and cohort studies within the Section of Cardiac Sciences and the Department of Cardiac Sciences.  This position works within the framework of the University & Cumming School of Medicine Policies and Procedures, as well as within the cardiac specific Clinical Research Standards of Practice (SOP).  The work hours are project based and variable

As a member of the research team, you will have knowledge of cardiac surgery procedures and peri/post operative care.  Duties are methodical and is important in the delivery of high-quality patient care and clinical data.  To this end, you will demonstrate strong communication, analytical and organizational skills.  You will work collaboratively with departmental and interdepartmental teams and you may provide direction or training to others in a research role.  Although much of the work may be done on computer, there may be patient interaction to administer tests and collect data. Limited clinical assessments my also be required, including wound assessments.

This is a recurring part-time position.  Recurring Part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • The RN utilizes the nursing process to provide comprehensive nursing care to patients involved in research protocols. The Registered Nurse provides professional, knowledgeable service to the  research patients and maintains competencies to ensure the best quality of care.
  • Record findings to collaborate on publications within the field of the research in both a national and international level
  • Conduct patient randomization, retro and prospective data collection and analyses
  • Perform standard trouble-shooting within the study SOPs
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Graduate of approved school of nursing required
  • Baccalaureate in Nursing considered an asset
  • Certification in BCLS required
  • Active membership in Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA) preferred
  • Previous experience in cardiac surgery required
  • Minimum 3 years experience as study coordinator, including account management
  • Minimum 5 years current medical/surgical nursing experience preferred
  • Provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical and clinical trial issues
  • Experience in facilitating and delivering presentations is an asset
  • Knowledge of theory and practical application of SOPs
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments.
  • Work with various biological samples (eg. blood, tissues, urine, etc)
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
