The Department of Clinical Neurosciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar with a keen intrest in styudying molecular mechanisms.
Job Description:
The successful candidate would join a research team of Dr. David Park under the guidance and direct supervision of Dr. Alvin Joselin whose research primarily focuses on understanding the death pathways that control neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and the mechanisms of function of PD linked genes.
Previous work for the lab has shown that the PD linked gene PINK1 plays a role in mitochondrial calcium regulation. The aim of the current project is to further explore the molecular mechanisms of this pathway using both cultured cells and rodent models.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development and execution of the project using multi-disciplinary approaches as required for the successful completion of the project. The open position is available initially for a period of 2 years with a possibility of extension. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in full time research and apply to national and international funding competitions.
Qualifications:
• The applicant should have a recent PhD (completed in the last 3 years) in neurosciences, molecular biology, cell biology, immunology or a related field.
• Strong background and experience working with rodent animal models is required. Specific experience in stereotactic surgeries is preferred.
• Experience in tissue sample preparation, histological staining techniques and stereology software.
• A strong interest in neuroscience and in using a multi-disciplinary approach to solve research questions using innovative and creative methodology.
• Demonstrable ability to work with animal models and a strong academic record.
• Ability to perform detail-oriented scientific research with modest supervision, after receiving appropriate training.
• Ability to multi-task and deal with multiple simultaneous priorities in an effective, efficient manner.
• Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization.
• Ability to analyze and present data, good oral and written communication skills and the ability to adhere to tight deadlines.
