Position Description

Area: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute

Duration: 2 years

Start Date: Immediate

Salary: $60,000 $CAD per year plus Plan C health benefits

The Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine  at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. This Full-time position is for approximately 2 years, with the possibility of extension. Reporting to the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion lead of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute, this position requires leadership, decision making, time management, and superior organizational skills. The position requires experience in research and / or projects with equity deserving communities.

The individual will conduct research relevant to Equity Diversity and Inclusion project. Three objectives guide our EDI practices: 1) Indigenous self-determination and health equity, 2) inclusive governance, and 3) intersectionality; they enable us to implement bold ideas with lasting impact. This national initiative will address key health inequities experienced by mothers and children and advance evidence-based Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) practices. We will create evidence-informed pathways that enable all children and communities to thrive - embracing the diversity of need, social and medical circumstances, and structural and systemic impositions differentially experienced by all members of our society.

Job Description:

  • Support the development and implementation of the EDI Action Plan 
  • Communicate and collaborate with diverse stakeholders including equity deserving communities, parents, researchers, clinicians, policy makers, administrators involved in the project etc.
  • Support the delivery of the EDI strategies for the project
  • Manage ethics submissions, modifications and renewals
  • Mentors and trains research assistants
  • Lead or co-lead stakeholder engagement sessions 
  • Contribute to the development of resources to build capacity and support EDI strategy of the project
  • Conducts literature reviews, literature search, article selection, data extraction and data analysis for systematic and scoping reviews
  • Collect interview and focus group data
  • Recruit research participants 
  • Conduct complex analysis including with NVivo data analysis software
  • Manage project documentation including protocol development, project planning, evaluation, and reporting
  • Prepare reports, peer reviewed manuscripts, presentations, educational materials and other dissemination materials   
  • Assists with research data management

Qualifications:

  • PhD in a relevant field, such as health science/research/knowledge translation/evaluation or related field
  • Experience with knowledge synthesis, community engagement and qualitative research
  • Strong knowledge of knowledge synthesis methods and qualitative data analysis methods including use of NVivo
  • Skills in quantitative data analysis is an asset
  • Track record of peer reviewed publications in reputable journals
  • Experience working on projects with equity deserving communities
  • Knowledge of EDI best practices, accessibility and human rights policies, and relevant federal/provincial legislation, in combination with insight provided by lived experiences of racism and/or other forms of discrimination
  • Strong skills in mentoring research assistants, undergraduate and graduate students
  • A high level of flexibility and ability to adapt to changing workloads and priorities is required
  • Must maintain and respect the confidential nature of the work
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to learn quickly, and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong time management, organization, analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent attention to details is a must.
  • Ability to thrive and deliver results in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), advanced internet skills
