Data Specialist, Postgraduate Medical Education

Position Overview

The Office of the Postgraduate Medical Education in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Data Specialist. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 24 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Data Specialist is responsible for facilitating data-driven decision making within the Office of Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) by providing expert data collection, analysis, compilation and visualization to Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Leadership.

Reporting to the Manager, Quality Improvement and Accreditation, PGME.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Structured Query Language (SQL) Database Queries

  • Create a relational database of PGME data sources

  • Act as primary contact for database inquiries, access and concerns

  • Provide input on key decision making about reports

  • Provide input on PGME reports

Data Analysis, Reporting, and Communication

  • Primary resource for compiling and collating PGME provided data

  • Knowledge and application of machine learning

  • Data extraction/reporting/analyses for all PGME activities (e.g. resident enrollments, rotation evaluations, process evaluation, administrative data, innovation and CQI metrics, benchmarking, etc.)

  • Provide relevant, meaningful, and accurate statistical reports relevant to PGME Leadership and key stakeholders

  • Provide statistical data and visualization, in the form of graphs, charts, and tables as appropriate, about key indicators of operational performance towards faculty and institutional strategic plans

  • Meet with key stakeholders to understand their data needs and obtain/analyze data to provide quality and timely reports for strategic decision-making

  • Present relevant data and project information to PGME Leadership as needed

  • Work with PGME Leadership and committees

Project Coordination

  • Work closely with the on strategic projects related to PGME Leadership, CQI team, research committee including reporting to committees, university, government, etc. as required

  • Develop high-quality presentations of data, ensuring proper university branding is followed

  • Effectively communicates relevant project information to PGME and stakeholders

  • Promotes collaboration and knowledge translation with internal and external members at every opportunity

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics or other relevant discipline such as Intelligent systems/machine learning required

  • Have numerical skills used in a data science context, including working with numerical data in analytics and/or machine learning contexts

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in database creation/monitoring, database creation, statistical analysis of data, data presentation, strategic communication documentation writing and review

  • Experience with Business Intelligence applications and tools with an emphasis on reporting, data mining and advanced analytics required

  • Experience with aspects of Information Management such as the collection and use of information from multiple sources in both structured and unstructured formats required

  • Experience with database design as it pertains to PGME Leadership as required

  • Experience with data integration in the context of the unified reporting

  • SQL Query writing required

  • Experience working alone as well as in a dynamic team with proven personal effectiveness and productivity is required

  • Experience with SQL, Python, Tableau, data warehouses/marts, RDBMS, and PowerBI

  • Extensive experience using various methods to model relationships in data (regression, clustering, decision trees, anomaly detection, trend prediction, time-series, forecasting, etc.)

  • Skilled at extracting insights from messy data

  • Expert at using inferential and descriptive statistics to guide decisions

  • Ability to use NLP (Natural Language Processing) to derive insights

  • Good at identifying and evaluating novel, complementary data sets

  • Experience with web content management systems will be considered an asset

  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures is an asset
