Position Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science, seeks outstanding candidates for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level, to start on or after 1st July 2016. Qualifications include a Ph.D. in Mathematical Finance or a related area. We welcome applications from candidates who will be able to work in the area of energy, commodity and environmental finance. The successful candidate will add to our existing strength in financial mathematics and join our Mathematical and Computational Laboratory, and will have the opportunity to develop collaborations with faculty in Electrical Engineering, Economics and the Finance group in the Haskayne School of Business.

Energy commodities and emissions play an important role in the global economy, and this role is recognized by the University of Calgary’s Strategic Research Theme on Energy Innovation for Today and Tomorrow. This position will expand our ability to build an Energy Science undergraduate program by bringing expertise in the mathematical modelling of energy markets and their associated risks. We are also looking for candidates with an interest in generating industry support and in the development of professional programming in Financial Mathematics.

Post-doctoral experience is an asset. Peer-reviewed external funding is normally expected to be sustained throughout the appointment, and industrial partnerships are strongly encouraged where appropriate. The position includes both teaching and research responsibilities, and an expectation to recruit and supervise graduate students. Successful applicants will be enthusiastic about contributing to both teaching and research. Applicants must provide evidence of excellence in research and teaching. Evidence for research excellence may comprise publications in top ranked and field-relevant academic journals, presentations at top conferences, research awards and accolades, and exceptional endorsements by referees of top international stature. Evidence for excellence in teaching may comprise positive teaching accomplishments and accolades, strong letters of reference and teaching evaluations, and a teaching dossier.

This is an excellent opportunity to develop a vigorous and independent externally-funded research program within a dynamic and collaborative environment. A competitive salary and an attractive start-up package are available. The candidate will be expected to apply for extramural support from national/provincial agencies to sustain their research program.

Increasing scholarly capacity will help the University of Calgary meet its strategic goal to become one of Canada's top five research universities by 2016, where innovative teaching and groundbreaking research go hand in hand, and where we fully engage the communities we both serve and lead. The strategy is called Eyes High, inspired by the university's Gaelic motto, which translates as 'I will lift up my eyes.'

Calgary, Canada’s fastest growing major city, offers a vibrant, multicultural and family-oriented environment with a population of more than 1,000,000. Situated near the Rocky Mountains, Banff National Park and Lake Louise, Calgary offers great quality of life and outstanding recreational activities.

Interested candidates should submit by email a single PDF file containing: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, summary of research interests and contact information for three referees, to:
