Area: Health and Wellness Lab – Exercise Oncology

Duration: 1-2 years

Start Date:  March 2024

Salary:  $50,000 - $65,000 CAD, commensurate with qualifications

The Health and Wellness Lab in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar. 

Job Description: 

The Health and Wellness Lab, led by Dr. Culos-Reed, conducts exercise oncology research, designed to enhance the quality of life of individuals living with and beyond cancer. Numerous initiatives, from pilot studies to implementation trials, are ongoing in the lab. The post-doctoral scholar research will focus on leading components of our Canadian Institutes of Health Research-Canadian Cancer Society, and Alberta Cancer Foundation-supported Project EXCEL: Exercise for Cancer to Enhance Living Well. This will include leading data set management and analyses (REDCap), working on sustainable program implementation challenges (RE-AIM framework), and leading publications and the development of policy briefs. The post-doctoral scholar will mentor junior graduate student (MSc and PhD) and undergraduate students, and will take on a lead supervisory role within the research project.The post-doctoral scholar will be supervised by Dr. Nicole Culos-Reed. The postdoctoral scholar duties will include management of EXCEL database analyses, development of policy briefs, and advocacy work to build exercise into standard cancer care. Within this role, the post-doctoral scholar will be encouraged and supported to build their independent research program across exercise oncology, and will be supported to apply for external awards locally and nationally. The Faculty of Kinesiology is the number one Sports Sciences Institute in North America, with access to leading researchers across disciplines, and with leading reesarch in women’s health issues, injury prevention, exercise physiology, motor control and learning, biomechanics, and in psychosocial determinants and outcomes from sport and exercise participation. Qualifications:

  • PhD in kinesiology, public policy, community health sciences/public health, epidemiology, or closely related discipline is required (completed within the last 2 years)
  • Strong track record of scholarly achievements for stage of development, and advanced expertise in quantitative data analysis and interpretation
  • Must have demonstrated success in academic knowledge translation, and experience with advocacy and policy work such as publications and presentations
  • Experience with the delivery of behaviour change trials
  • Methodological skill sets:
    • Knowledge of and experience with a variety of implementation research methods
    • Experience in database management
    • Strong background in research design, methodology (clinical and health implementation research, qualitative research), biostatistics and knowledge translation including preparation of manuscripts and policy briefs
    • Knowledge of secondary data sources for research such as electronic medical records and administrative data an asset
    • Advanced skills in statistical software (SPSS, Stata, SAS, or R)
  • Excellent organization skills, including the ability to work independently and to multitask
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Excellent attention to details is critical
  • High level of effective time management, personal initiative, and teamwork
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills is essential
  • Strong team skills as this position will have a high degree of interaction/contact with researchers, students, and other stakeholders (clinicians, patients, administrators)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team
  • Experience working with clinical populations is preferred
  • Experience providing mentorship to graduate and undergraduate students
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor
  • Ability to thrive and deliver results in a fast-paced team environment
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), advanced internet skills
