Position Overview
The Department of the Microbiology, Immunology & Infectious Diseases in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Along with the Principle Investigator, develop and implement the strategic vision of the research project(s) and research group
Take responsibility for successful completion of projects from the conception stage through the submission of all contract deliverables and project closure
Represent research team at national and international meetings, conferences, and seminars
Full responsibility for quality control
Conduct research and provide documentation for use in scholarly publications
Monitor and control the financial health of the group; track spending and intervene to maximize cost effectiveness of the group activities when required
Participate in high level funding and research strategy sessions
Identify and pursue national and international research and development opportunities
Develops operating procedures, safety protocols, and makes recommendation on workflow improvements
Responsible for management, maintenance and reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment
Involved in day-to-day supervision of trainees or junior staff, monitoring, planning, and supporting activities of others
Responsible for producing figures for publication and presentation of research findings
Responsible for producing initial drafts of manuscripts for publication and appropriate scientific journals
Qualifications / Requirements:
PhD degree in molecular cell biology, biochemistry or molecular virology is required
Minimum of 6 years of post-doctoral experience in a relevant research area is required
Minimum of 10 years of technical experience within molecular biology or molecular virology is required
Direct research experience with cell culture and primary cells is essential
Direct research experience with molecular cloning is essential
Direct research experience with molecular virology or recombinant virology will be deemed an asset
Minimum of 1 to 3 years of co-supervisory experience
Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological experiments
Ability to troubleshoot lab techniques and recommend change to processes or procedures
Ability to provide technical support for other team members or trainees and provide advice on technical lab issues
Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of related technical procedures
Ability to undertake literature reviews
Understand of biosafety codes and standards related to specialization
Operate and maintain complex technical equipment within the lab
Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), GraphPad Prism, Adobe photoshop (or equivalent graphics program for figures)
