Position Description

Area : Methane Emissions Modeling

Duration : Two years

Start Date : Immediate

Salary : $70,000 CAD per year, plus a comprehensive benefits package

 

The Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Methane Emissions Modeling focusing on the attribution and quantification of methane emissions from area and point sources. The Postdoctoral Scholar will be part of an interdisciplinary team working on methane emissions from natural gas production, transmission, distribution, and end use.

Job Description:

The successful applicant will contribute to the development and application of innovative emissions modeling techniques to attribute and quantify methane emissions from various sources along the natural gas supply chain. The primary goal is to improve the characterization of methane emissions rates from different sources. They will work with different emissions measurement datasets (vehicle-based, aerial, satellite, fixed monitors) and contribute to research activities with international partners. They will have the opportunity to mentor graduate and undergraduate students working on related projects.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a PhD in atmospheric science, engineering, or related fields and strong analytical and computational skills. Clear examples of experience working with emissions modeling techniques should be expressed in the cover letter. Preference will be given to applicants who can start immediately.

In addition, the candidate should have the following qualifications:

• Demonstrated knowledge of emissions flux modeling (mass balance, inverse Gaussian, backwards Lagrangian).
• Experience with emissions measurement data and modeling methods.
• Experience with IoT, cloud computing, and integrated multi-sensor systems is desired.
• Strong written communication skills, preferably demonstrated in writing of peer-review publication and technical reports.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary group involving students and faculty from a range of backgrounds, as well as external stakeholders.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders.
• Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Efficient organizational and time management skills in setting priorities and accomplishing tasks within deadlines.
