Tenure-Track Assistant Professor (Research) in Computer Science, Faculty of Science

Position Description

The Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor (Research) in Computer Science position with a focus on software science. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024.

The candidate must have strong interests in supporting the Department of Computer Science’s research initiatives and training programs. The candidate is expected to contribute to the University of Calgary’s Ahead of Tomorrow strategic plan to promote transdisciplinary scholarship and innovation and empower our students and communities to tackle society’s big problems.

The successful candidate must possess the interest and ability to teach a variety of undergraduate courses in computer science and especially topics related to software science, in order to support teaching in our undergraduate and graduate programs.  We offer both in-person and virtual sections of many of our undergraduate courses.  Teaching assignments of faculty members is a collaborative process where we aim to balance the needs of individual faculty members and the needs of students.

Service to the Department, Faculty, University, and community is also expected.

The candidate must possess a PhD in Computer Science or a related discipline at the time of appointment with commensurate experience for the rank for which they are applying. Preference will be given to candidates with a primary focus and interest in one or more of the following areas:

• static, dynamic, or historical software analysis
• mining software repositories
• recommendation systems for software science
• pattern and anomaly detection from software analysis
• automated program repair
• machine learning or artificial intelligence in software science
• representative sampling techniques
• interactions between theoretical and empirical approaches for software science
• scalability of software analyses (big data, performance, distributed computation aspects)
• statistical analyses over large software corporation
• visualization in software science
• cooperative and human aspects of software science

Candidates who are near completion of their program will also be considered.

The successful candidate will be able to show the following:

• an early-career research and publication record,
• commitment to graduate supervision,
• ability to effectively work within a team,
• commitment to inclusive teaching and learning using contemporary approaches,
• how they can contribute to the Department, Faculty, University, and Calgary community.

Description of Work Environment
Successful applicants will become faculty members in the Department of Computer Science. The Department offers a variety of programs:

• BSc in Computer Science
• BSc in Data Science
• MSc and PhD in Computer Science
• MSc and PhD in Computational Media Design
• Professional certificates and Master’s in Data Science and Analytics
• Professional certificates and Master’s in Information Security and Privacy.  

We are also developing an on-line pathway for our BSc in Computer Science. Successful applicants will primarily contribute to the software science components of the Department’s programs, but will also have the opportunity to contribute to other components and other programs offered by the Department and Faculty.

The Department of Computer Science is in the Faculty of Science.
