Position Description

The Sustainable Systems Engineering program in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Industrial Systems Transitions with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024.

Sustainable Systems Engineering (SUSE) is a technical, life-centered transdisciplinary field focusing on the design, integration, and management of complex systems over their life cycles with the goal of environmental, economic, and social sustainability. The program will equip engineers with the knowledge, awareness and competencies needed to manage and implement engineering solutions that minimize negative impacts, strive to achieve at least net neutral outcomes, and, ideally, are restorative with people and the planet in mind.

We are seeking an emerging scholar to establish a distinctive, forward-thinking, and enduring research initiative in sustainability transitions in heavy industry, with an emphasis on the role of technology innovation in socio-technical change. Specifically, sustainability transitions in heavy industry would focus on the role for technologies and technical innovation systems to lead to more sustainable outcomes in industrial sectors.  They will enrich our academic community, propel pioneering research, and ignite inspiration among the next generation of scholars. The candidate will actively contribute to teaching, curriculum development, graduate student supervision and mentoring and is expected to provide service supporting SUSE, School, University and Profession. As a University of Calgary community member, the successful candidate will support and contribute to equity, diversity, inclusion, and a positive working and learning environment.

The ideal prospective candidate should have:

  • A strong background in quantitative research methods (e.g., statistics, optimization, uncertainty, risk assessment, and multicriteria-decision analysis) and modeling as applied to problems in the area of technology innovation, economics, or industrial and innovation policy.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of and to guide transdisciplinary research teams
  • A history of successfully acquiring external funding and the capability to foster meaningful partnerships with industry and government stakeholders
  • Experience working in industry and/or government
  • A track record of excellence in teaching.

Prospective candidates must have:

  • A degree in an engineering discipline and a doctoral degree with a focus on sustainability-related methods or problems
  • A track record or demonstrated potential of generating high-quality and impactful scholarly research
  • The potential to establish an externally funded research program, and to achieve international recognition within five years
  • Alignment between their research interests and those of the Schulich School of Engineering (Schulich Momentum: Enhancing Community, Expanding Impact) and the University of Calgary (Ahead of Tomorrow)
  • Ability to attract and develop excellent trainees, students, and future researchers
  • Ability to develop and teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses core to engineering and relating to SUSE specifically in quantitative research methods and modelling
  • Have strong oral and written English communication skills
  • A commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Engineering
  • Be eligible for registration as a professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)

The successful candidate will benefit from a rich ecosystem that includes world-class engineering scholars, a focus on entrepreneurship and innovation, and a university community that supports transdisciplinary research, partnerships, and collaborations and supports research and teaching excellence.  The University of Calgary is a national leader in sustainability systems, with research activities and programs spanning departments, schools, universities, and communities.

Interested individuals are encouraged to submit an application online via the `Apply Now’ link and include in one PDF file (which may require you to merge documents):

  • Cover letter and curriculum vitae, including the name and contact information of three referees
  • Statement of research interests, accomplishments, and vision (3 pages)
