Position Overview

The Schulich School of Enginnering is currently seeking a Part-time Limited Term Manager, Indigenous Programs & Outreach for approximately 2 years.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Manager, Indigenous Programs & Outreach will be responsible for providing strategic direction and operational oversight for the Indigenous Programs Schulich School of Engineering for both undergraduate and graduate students. This position will provide leadership to the advising staff and part-time/students employees who support student success.

The Manager will support a holistic approach to Indigenous student supports and work in collaboration with the University of Calgary Indigenous Strategy, ii’ taa’poh’to’p. The incumbent will be responsible for the success of the Indigenous Pathways Program for incoming Indigenous students. They will coordinate advising to ensure that Indigenous students have a variety of opportunities to solicit advice, leveraging both in-person and virtual service delivery. This position will be active with community outreach within Alberta. They will be responsible for rooms and spaces within SSE that support Indigenous students.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Connect with education leaders in Indigenous communities in Alberta to develop relationships and STEM education opportunities. 
  • Creating a professional relationship with like-minded post-secondary institutions, to understand the opportunities across Canada and enhance the offerings within SSE.
  • Mentor and support new potential recruits for the Indigenous Pathways program.
  • Support an inclusive environment within the spaces (rooms) within SSE for both the campus Indigenous community and current and future students. 
  • Establish a welcome and inclusively, culturally competent understanding within SSE faculty, staff and students that promotes and respects Indigenous ways of knowing, teaching, learning and research. 
  • Supervisory responsibility for the Indigenous Advisor and up to 10 Indigenous Discover Engineering Student employees who will support the Indigenous students both through Writing Symbols lodge and the Engineering Student Centre.
  • Exercising sound judgment and making decisions which directly impact the programs, services, and operational effectiveness, and Indigenous students. 
  • Initiating and leading projects aimed at improving the support for Indigenous Truth and Reconciliation within the SSE.
  • Identifies professional development needs and skills priorities for the undergraduate student support team; continuous personal development, learning and training; keeps current with post-secondary developments and trends in student services.
  • Promoting a collaborative team environment through excellent role modeling and sharing of knowledge to increase Indigenous ways of knowing and doing.
  • Working in close collaboration with the leadership team within SSE, the Office of Indigenous Engagement, and Writing Symbols lodge to ensure implementation of University of Calgary policies and procedures relating to Indigenous student recruitment, retention, and progression.
  • Effectively interpreting, communicating, and ensuring compliance with University and SSE regulations, policies and procedures when providing advice or assistance to faculty, staff, and current and prospective Indigenous students.
  • Working within the SSE Indigenous Strategy Committee to share knowledge and create programs that enhance Indigenous student supports within SSE.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education in Education, Business, Operations Management or a similar field, or equivalent experience within outreach and student engagement.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience with Indigenous communities, committed to the path of transformation for truth and reconciliation.
  • The ability to lead, develop, and guide others in a competent and professional manner.
  • Well-developed decision-making, problem-solving, creative thinking, and planning skills.  
  • The ability to build relationships and collaborate with others, as well as recognize and act on opportunities as they arise.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and analyze business needs and participate in the development of goals, objectives, policies, and procedures; including aligning staff and resources to achieve targets.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, email, internet, and web-based applications, and with specialized information systems used for post-secondary admissions, registration, and monitoring of student performance.
