Position Overview

The Department of Surgery in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Scientist. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Scientist is a key scientific leadership role within the Surgery Strategic Clinical Network (SCN). This position will report to the Scientific Director, Surgery SCN. This position is responsible and accountable for leading and providing direction primarily for the evaluation of a collaborative Health Innovation Implementation and Spread (HIIS) project, aimed at reducing surgical wait times in Alberta by implementing an integrated, province-wide central access and triage system for surgical consultation. The Research Scientist is responsible for conducting a collaborative evaluation of the central access and triage model for surgical consultations and its impact on surgical wait times.

This position may require some travel within Alberta.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Leads Senior Analysts and Research Assistants across the Province on the development, implementation, and evaluation of the HIIS project
  • Leading and undertaking applied research and evaluation studies that align with the Surgery SCN Transformational Roadmap including design, implementation, management, analyses, and interpretation. Undertakes and oversees grant preparation for project-specific studies
  • Secures additional external funding where appropriate
  • Oversees data analysis (epidemiological and biostatistical) and interpretation of evaluations (e.g., developmental, summative, formative) projects
  • Provides methodological consultation to the collaborative stakeholder team and Alberta Health
  • Presents evidence within and external to AHS
  • As a member of the Surgery SCN, is also involved in the strategic formulation, development and administration of policy and programs for surgical research and innovation in the province
  • Provides information and research evidence to support critical decision-making regarding program and service design with the Surgery SCN, Surgical leadership, as well as with our external partners including other partner SCNs (PHCIN), AH, AMA, HQCA, AI, etc.
  • Provides methodological consultation to Directors (Senior, Provincial, and Executive), Senior Leaders/Managers, Senior Analysts, physicians and scientific staff on the application of appropriate methodologies, data collection, analysis and standards for network specific projects
  • Fosters communication with partners within AHS and beyond (e.g., IHE, Alberta Health, HQCA, academic institutions and national/international organizations)
  • Participates in scientific societies, committees, and review groups at the local, provincial and national level
  • May have direct patient/client contact when patient/clients are research/evaluation participants. The position would operate under usual ethics guidelines that requires review and ethics approvals that take into account patient safety

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Doctorate degree in epidemiology, biostatistics or health services research, plus a minimum of 3 years’ experience undertaking research and evaluation projects using both qualitative and quantitative methods
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience conducting analyses for epidemiologic and/or health services research and evaluations using secondary data
  • A minimum of 3 years in a health care organization of significant size, complexity and diversity (healthcare experience an asset)
  • Currently possess or will seek an adjunct position within an academic institution
  • A demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development
  • Extensive knowledge of epidemiologic and evaluation research methodologies including conducting scientific and epidemiologic investigations and translating evidence for informed decision making. Knowledge and experience with mixed methods is an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills. Experience managing multidisciplinary projects that involve multiple stakeholders
  • Proven ability to liaise with senior leaders in health care, researchers, planners and senior administrators throughout AHS, Universities, IHE, Alberta Health, and outside agencies and organizations
  • Strong ability to plan, organize and manage short- and long-term plans and evaluation projects and deliver customer-focused results
  • Excellent critical appraisal skills
  • Strong conceptual and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills, influential skills, client focused orientation and commitment to providing quality services
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a high-paced team setting and independently
  • Experience with strategic and business planning, budgeting and operations management would be an asset
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license with proven good driving record (abstract required)
