Position Description

The School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), Division of Drama invites applications for Sessional Instructors to teach the following courses in the spring and summer 2024.

Lectures for the spring 2024 term run from May 6 to June 17, and lectures for the summer 2024 term run from June 24 to August 6; however, some course offerings may run for three weeks rather than six weeks. Individual course dates are noted below; please see the academic schedule for additional important dates and deadlines.

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING COURSE OFFERINGS ARE TENTATIVE, PENDING SUFFICIENT ENROLMENTS.

Spring 2024

DRAM 203: Creativity

Dates: May 6 – June 17, 2024 — Web-based, asynchronous
Description: From the economy to the environment and from politics to entertainment, creativity is an endlessly renewable resource that offers benefits for all citizens and may well be the most important human element for our future. Students from all disciplines can investigate the practices and processes of creativity and explore the ways in which it can help enrich their lives.

       Required qualifications:

  • PhD or Master’s in Drama and/or Interdisciplinary field of study
  • Proven ability to deliver interdisciplinary curriculum to students from across a range of disciplines and subject areas
  • Evidence of expertise and successful teaching record for large courses and experience grading academic writing
  • Experience designing and delivering web-based courses; proficiency with online instruction tools (e.g., Zoom, Yuja, D2L, etc.)
  • National recognition through professional publication and/or professional awards across multiple print genres—i.e., drama, fiction, poetry, etc.
  • Demonstrated professional practice across multiple media—i.e., print, live performance, film, radio, etc.
  • Expertise in contemporary approaches to creative writing and critical analysis
  • Experience and knowledge of non-traditional practices preferred; experience working with Indigenous, Black or BIPOC theatre companies considered an asset.
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver curriculum at the post-secondary level.  

DRAM 358: Performance Creation in Applied Practices

Dates: May 6 – June 17, 2024 — Monday through Thursday, 12:00 – 15:50
Description: Explorations in personal/group creative process; facilitation of performance forms that may include sound and movement exploration, storytelling, ritual, mask, puppetry, and the collaborative creation of original performance. Emphasis will be placed on collaborative practices and group communication.

       Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Drama and/or equivalent professional experience in theatre
  • Demonstrated artistic practice across performance mediums such as writing, acting, theatre, mask, puppetry, etcetera.  
  • Experience and knowledge of non-traditional creation practices preferred; experience working with Indigenous, Black or BIPOC theatre companies considered an asset.
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver performance creation curriculum at the post-secondary level.


DRAM 381.08: Topics in Theatre Practice (Stage Combat)

Dates: May 6 – 27, 2024 — Mondays through Thursday, 09:00 – 11:45
Description: Introduction to stage combat for theatre and performance.

       Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Drama or equivalent professional experience
  • Certification from Fight Directors Canada
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver pedagogically sound curriculum at the post-secondary level
  • Ability to facilitate appropriate student engagement through a variety of learning modalities
  • Contemporary artistic practice that reflects knowledge and understanding of topics in the course outline
  • Experience and knowledge of non-traditional creation practices preferred; experience working with Indigenous, Black or BIPOC theatre artists and companies considered an asset.


DRAM 382.01: Topics in Drama (Writing for Performance)

Dates: May 6 – June 17, 2024 — Mondays and Wednesday, 18:00 – 19:50
Description: Introduction for writers at any levels to the essentials of writing for the stage, screen or radio through exploring character, dramatic action and dialogue. Students will support each other from initial idea to finding the structure that best suits their chosen form. Through facilitation, students will learn how to steer helpful conversations about their work during its process. In turn, students will learn how to give responsive feedback that empowers their fellow writers.

       Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Drama or equivalent professional experience
  • Demonstrated professional practice in writing for performance including theatre, film, radio etcetera.  
  • National recognition through professional publication and professional awards.
  • Expertise in current creative and critical thinking models.
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver pedagogically sound curriculum at the post-secondary level
  • Ability to facilitate appropriate student engagement through a variety of learning modalities
  • Experience and knowledge of non-traditional creation practices preferred; experience working with Indigenous, Black or BIPOC theatre artists and companies considered an asset.


DRAM 481.09: Advanced Topics in Theatre Practice (Exploration of Physical Comedy and Clowning)

Dates: May 6 – May 27, 2024 — Mondays through Thursday, 13:00 – 15:45
Description: This course is an expedition through the imaginative worlds and landscapes through practice of clown and mask. Designed to lead participants on a journey into their creative potential, this course will focus on accessing impulse, cultivating play, and failing with pleasure. Learn strategies for escorting ideas out of the ether and into the realm of the actual. Voyage into a space of deep listening to self and others. An exploration into the possibilities of physical comedy.

       Required qualifications:

  • Master’s in Drama and/or Interdisciplinary field of study, as well as advanced study of clown
  • Demonstrated professional practice in performance creation for clown, and clown-based processes that may also be included in naturalistic performance styles and conventional theatre practice
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver pedagogically sound curriculum at the post-secondary level, with experience in the creation of assessment rubrics, grading and communication through D2L considered an asset
  • Experience and knowledge of non-traditional creation practices preferred; experience working with Indigenous, Black or BIPOC theatre artists and companies considered an asset.


Summer 2023

DRAM 205: Story

Dates: June 24 – August 6, 2024 — Web-based, asynchronous
Description: An exploration of the elements of story present in the arts and beyond. Story is an exciting, creative, dynamic and universal form of human expression with the potential to engage and inspire students from across departments and disciplines.

       Required qualifications:

  • Master’s in Drama and/or Interdisciplinary field of study
  • Proven ability to deliver interdisciplinary curriculum to students from across a range of disciplines and subject areas
  • Evidence of expertise and successful teaching record for large courses and experience grading academic writing
  • Experience designing and delivering web-based courses; proficiency with online instruction tools (e.g., Zoom, Yuja, D2L, etc.)
  • National recognition through professional publication and/or professional awards across multiple print genres—i.e., drama, fiction, poetry, etc.
  • Demonstrated professional practice across multiple media—i.e., print, live performance, film, radio, etc.
  • Expertise in contemporary approaches to creative writing and critical analysis
