The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Assistant reports to the Research Program Manager, Division of Palliative Medicine. The Research Assistant will work closely with the Principal Investigators and coinvestigators, Traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders, community partners, clinicians, and others as necessary.

The Research Assistant will support the "Telling the stories of Indigenous Cancer Patient Multidisciplinary Rounds" project. Indigenous Cancer Patient Multidisciplinary Rounds bring together health care providers and support persons from across sectors, including an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper, cancer centre and community care providers, to advocate for and support Indigenous cancer clients facing complex care barriers. Using Indigenous ways of knowing, the research team will seek to understand the impact of Rounds on patients and providers, and to spread Rounds to other contexts and settings if/where appropriate.

This is a hybrid position; the candidate will work remotely and in person at the University of Calgary Foothills Medical Campus as required.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Organize meetings of the research team which may involve scheduling, preparing agendas and slides, and transcribing minutes
  • Work with study investigators to develop the story-telling protocol and associated documents (e.g., recruitment materials, consent forms)
  • Prepare ethics submissions and amendments to Research Ethics Board(s)
  • Recruit and consent story-telling participants
  • Schedule individual and/or group story-telling sessions
  • Participate in the story-telling as a listener and conduct thematic analysis
  • Facilitate the provision of gifts, offerings and/or honoraria as per Indigenous cultural protocol
  • Prepare abstracts, reports, presentations, and manuscripts
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers, Indigenous Nurse Navigators, research team members, research participants, community partners, and others
  • Manage own time effectively and ensure immediate reports-to manager is kept informed of activities and progress of work

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Experience in a health/medical research environment would be an asset
  • Knowledge of and experience with Indigenous ways of knowing and Indigenous methodologies required
  • Understanding of and commitment to engage in Indigenous protocols, work with Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous practices required
  • Knowledge of the Blackfoot Confederacy, Blackfoot culture, and Blackfoot language fluency would be an asset
  • Experience in qualitative research would be an asset
  • Previous experience completing research ethics board submissions, amendments and renewals, and familiarity with IRISS, would be an asset
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) required
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills required
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks under own initiative with minimal supervision required
