The Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a CRISM National Coordinator position. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Canadian Research Initiative in Substance Matters (CRISM) is seeking a full-time bilingual National Coordinator. The position will be administered through the University of Calgary, and directly supervised by Dr. David Hodgins, but will support problematic substance use intervention research throughout Canada via the five CRISM Nodes

CRISM's objective is to translate evidence-based interventions for illicit and prescription drug misuse into clinical practice, community based prevention, and health system changes. CRISM is a platform to conduct substance misuse intervention research, including community-based primary and secondary prevention, as well as randomized pharmacotherapy and psychosocial trials with collaborating treatment programs. CRISM is modeled after the US National Institute of Drug Abuse Clinical trials Network, and like this NIH network, is a national consortium of academic researchers, service-providers, persons with lived and living experience, and policy-makers (for additional information on CRISM, follow this link: http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/44597.html).

CRISM provides a concrete mechanism to enhance collaboration with non-academic partners and researchers alike. Funding provided to CRISM will be used to develop and maintain national infrastructure to support research and knowledge exchange on problematic substance use interventions delivered in clinical and community settings.

The Coordinator will assume overall responsibility for daily management and oversight of national-level activities of CRISM, an initiative of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Coordinating of national research activities and communication across CRISM nodes
  • Coordinating implementation of IT resources to provide online supports for cross- node activities
  • Planning and implementing knowledge mobilization activities and workshops, including an annual national CRISM meeting, to facilitate dialogue and collaboration among CRISM members.
  • Drafting national documents (e.g., reports, presentations, webinars) describing CRISM activities.
  • Overall management of the CRISM national budget, administrative record-keeping, and coordinating sub-contracts for national services.
  • Maintaining relationships with a diverse group of academic and non-academic node members, as well as community outreach. Raising awareness about substance use issues and promote evidence-based interventions at the community level, by collaborating with community-based organizations, and local level organizations.
  • Fostering partnerships and collaborations with external organizations to leverage resources and expertise in advancing CRISM's platform. Bridge the gap between stakeholders by identifying relevant research, facilitating communication, and fostering collaboration to ensure that research findings inform decision-making and practice.
  • Drafting national reports and other documents.
  • Some travel will be required.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • University degree in a relevant discipline (public health, sociology, psychology, health policy, health economics, etc.) with completed coursework in research methodologies, statistics, policy analysis, and research ethics.
  • At least three years of research program management experience, which will have included oversight of funds and supervision of staff, accountability, preferably in addiction.
  • Experience in knowledge translation and mobilization.
  • French-and English language fluency.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience working within health and/or government systems (experience in addiction and mental health systems is strongly preferred);
  • Broad experience in research administration including familiarity with CIHR.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and timelines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain well-functioning professional relationships with a variety of individuals and groups drawn from academic and non-academic interests.
  • Awareness and cultural competency with INDIGENOUS stakeholders and populations.
  • Sensitivity to ethical issues, especially privacy and confidentiality.
