Description

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator. 

The work setting will occur in a combination of office and clinical environments (including outpatient clinics, procedure rooms, emergency wards and inpatient wards). Some work with biohazardous materials is anticipated (collecting, transport and storage of laboratory specimens).

The successful candidate should be comfortable working in an active clinical setting where patients are receiving clinical care. 

The RA will be primarily based at the Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC), but will need to be able to travel between PLC and other clinical sites within Calgary. As the RA will be required to use their personal vehicle in the performance of work, there is an option to receive mileage reimbursement.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Assist with general operational and study related duties as required
  • Assist in dealing with public inquiries about studies and with study invitation mail-outs. Contact interested individuals by phone to discuss studies and arrange appointments
  • Conduct study visits with patients, including obtaining informed consent, collection and review of study questionnaires and completion of study forms
  • Collection, transfer and storage of laboratory specimens according to standard operating procedures and study protocols
  • Data entry for research projects. Maintaining research databases
  • Extract data from clinical charts and databases into research data collection forms
  • Submit annual reports and protocol deviations to the Research Ethics Board using the online IRISS submission system
  • Other clerical duties may be required

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Previous experience in clinical research or a health-related field of at least 1 - 2 years is preferred, but not required
  • A diploma or undergraduate degree in a health-related field is required
  • The overall combination of education and work experience will be considered. A high level of effective time and project management is required
  • Ability to multi-task and address multiple simultaneous priorities in an effective, efficient manner. Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Self-motivating, displaying personal initiative and an ability to work within a team
  • Ability to work with limited supervision
  • Excellent communication skills are required, including ability to communicate effectively with the general public and patients, in person and on the phone; as well as ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization, including nurses and physicians, is also required
  • Attention to detail is required, as is the ability to follow standard operating procedures Ability to enter data into computer databases with a high degree of accuracy is required. Basic proficiency with computers and/or tablets is required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and REDCap are useful, but not required
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license with proven good driving record (abstract required)
