he Hotchkiss Brain Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Senior Research Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator (PI) and Director.
The Hotchkiss Real-World Evidence (RWE) initiative is a new virtual data platform established to assist HBI scientists with accessing, integrating, and analyzing routinely collected health data, clinical registries, and external sources of data including surveys and population-based datasets.
Work intensity is variable and may occasionally require extended hours.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Leadership
- Oversee implementation and delivery of multiple projects within the RWE Initiative relating to research in areas of brain and mental health disorders at a high level while defining objectives and performance expectations for the team
- Provide high-level support toward the RWE initiative's operational and strategic objectives
- Assist the RWE Initiative and the Executive Committee by providing knowledge, skills, and training to support clinical and health systems research and practice across the HBI
Managerial duties include
- Full cycle recruitment of research staff including full/part-time staff
- Formal non-academic supervision of staff, undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows
- Serving on Academic committees as the Senior Research Manager, RWE representative
- Creating and updating jobs profiles as needed
- Ensuring salary decisions are aligned with project needs and budgets
- Full-scope performance management of the research staff, including disciplinary action and termination when required
- Conducting annual performance reviews and providing timely feedback to employees
Initiative Management
- Manage the daily operations of the RWE platform including maintenance and control of equipment, computer software, and ordering of materials and equipment
- Develop and manage research budgets
- Prepare and present annual reports and budget templates as needed
Strategic Management
- Establish data access and sharing frameworks including contracts, privacy, and legal agreements
- Develop and maintain close relationship with the provincial health authority, government ministries, and academic stakeholders to facilitate privacy and legal agreements required for research
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for the RWE initiative
Research Operations
- In collaboration with the PI and Director, conduct literature reviews, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, and other research for use in scholarly publications
- Provide expertise and leadership on the development of research dissemination materials (e.g., grants, manuscripts, abstracts, presentations)
- Align, design and implement new research projects to enhance success of the RWE funding applications
- Under the direction and collaboration with the PI
- Act on behalf of the PI and Director as requested (e.g. committee representation, presentations, networking events, etc.)
- Presentation of research to scientific audiences
- Presenting and contributing to community organizations that are aligned with the RWE Initiative's objectives
Communication and Relationship Development
- Provide expert recommendations and solutions related to strategy and partnerships, ensuring consistency throughout institute practices
- Work through complex university issues and challenging interpersonal interactions with diplomacy and composure
- Provide credible expert advice and consultation, education, and support to the RWE leadership team, partners, and stakeholders
Qualifications / Requirements:
- PhD in biostatistics, data science, epidemiology, public health, or related health research field
- Postdoctoral training an asset
- Minimum 5 years of related experience required, though years and scope of previous experience will be considered
- Minimum 5-7 years of related technical experience within the research specialty field with 5 years of supervisory experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in execution of strategic plans, financial management and reporting required
- 3-5 years of experience in health-related research leadership and knowledge translation is an asset
- Required to be task and detail oriented, organized, and efficient, with strong time management and multi-tasking skills
- Required to have strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills, with an ability to interact effectively with stakeholders in multiple domains (scientists, clinicians, technical staff, trainees, administrative support, granting organizations, fundraisers, and donors) to enable a collaborative and goal-oriented research program
- Required to have strong leadership skills, including a demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities and the ability to motivate, inspire and build confidence in others to achieve common goals
- An understanding of budgeting and financial accounting for a research program, small business, or small organization is required; an ability to help generate and communicate financial reports is required
- Acts expertly as the key person thinking beyond existing solutions when problems are encountered
- An ability to hire and help manage staff is required
- Experience with independently preparing and coordinating successful grant applications
- Experience managing in a unionized research environment an asset
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, organization, strategic thinking, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to communicate academic research aims and results to a wide variety of audiences
- Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to mentor and coach others
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), and Internet skills
