Duration: Two years, with the possibility of extension

Start Date: November 1, 2024 (flexible)

Salary: $70,000 CAD per year plus Plan C health benefits

 

The Department of Paediatrics in the Cumming School of Medicine  at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Environmental Chemical Exposure and Neurodevelopment.

Job Description:

This full-time Postdoctoral Scholar opportunity is available at the Owerko Centre in the Alberta Children¿s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) in the Department of Pediatrics for a highly qualified and motivated individual. The Postdoctoral Scholar will contribute to Dr. Deborah Dewey¿s federally-funded research program that is investigating the effects of the exposure to environmental chemicals during prenatal development and early childhood on children¿s neurodevelopment and epigenome. The successful applicant will be part of the Alberta Pregnancy and Nutrition (APrON) study Neurotox research team. They should have a strong background in neuroscience, neurotoxicology, epidemiology, and/or epigenetics. Expertise and experience in advanced statistical methods including machine learning methods and/or trajectory analysis of longitudinal data would be considered an asset. The successful scholar will be strongly encouraged to apply for national/international awards.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in neuroscience, neuropsychology, epidemiology, neurotoxicology, epigenetics or a related discipline awarded in the last 5 years
  • Expertise in research examining associations between environmental chemical exposures and children¿s health and development
  • Strong background knowledge in neurotoxicology and child neurodevelopment
  • Experience in the field of epigenetics would be a huge asset
  • Demonstrated productivity through peer-reviewed publications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently as part of a research team
  • Experience in using advanced statistical methods, particularly those related to machine learning and analysis of longitudinal data 
  • High level of effective organizational, time management and personal initiative skills
  • Desire to learn new research methods and contribute to the learning of others on the research team
  • Strong leadership skills, and an interest in supervision and mentorship of graduate and undergraduate students is an asset
