Description

The Department of the Clinical Research in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research License Practical Nurse. This Fixed Term  Full-time position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research License Practical Nurse main responsibilities are to book and check in study patients and perform study procedures as required by the study protocol and requested by the study team.  This includes taking vital signs, performing ECGs, performing counts of returned study medication and recording data on provided study worksheets according to Good Clinical Practice guidelines. 

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Provides required procedures for study patients once patient is identified, in accordance with recognized and approved techniques.  Copies are routinely given to coordinator to file and ECG machine stores results), count returned study medication.  Records data on study worksheet provided by research coordinator
  • Perform procedures such as phlebotomy, injections and infusions
  • Direct patients to laboratory for blood work if required.  Assist medical laboratory assistant with patients who encounter difficulties during procedure
  • Deliver stat blood work to CLS lab if necessary as well as deliver ECGs for interpretation
  • Inform research coordinator that patient is ready for the visit
  • Guard patient confidentiality, however if pertinent information divulged to LPN by patient, it is then passed on to research coordinator
  • Book patient visits using clinic processes and University Systems (SharePoint or CTMS)
  • Assist with billing of patient visits using clinic processes and University Systems (Winward)
  • Assist with daily delivery of research related supplies and mail
  • Stocks and maintains cleanliness in patient rooms
  • Ensures that the patient is comfortable, safe, and informed while in the clinic area. Some patients are compromised due to their illness and may require attention
  • Compile daily and monthly patient statistics. Prepare daily patient lists copy, and give to the laboratory staff
  • Month end statistics for patient visits
  • Develop liaison with research coordinators and physicians
  • Obtain medical and office supplies as required and document appropriately.
  • Organize and assist research coordinators with offsite storage process
  • Addresses clinic maintenance issues if possible identify problems to clinic coordinator or report accordingly
  • Ability to deal with security system for storage of laboratory samples when alarming

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA)
  • Skills and knowledge to work to full scope of LPN practice (including phlebotomy, injections and infusions)
  • Current BCLS-HCP certification required
  • At least 1 year of recent nursing care experience within the last 2 years preferably in a clinical research environment
  • Knowledge and experience related to clinical trial conduct preferred
  • Demonstrated proficiency in clinical assessment skills within Scope of Practice
  • Knowledge of informed consent preferred
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice an asset
  • Experience and ability to work with various biological samples
  • Demonstrated strong critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated high functioning time-management and organizational skills required to function in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written required
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
