The Hotchkiss Brain Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator. 

The successful applicant will provide research support to a clinical trial study examining how sleep quality may affect anxiety and depression rates in youth. The Research Assistant will be responsible for helping with recruitment and running participants through the research protocol (e.g., conducting clinical interviews, sending surveys to participants).

This is a recurring part-time position with variable work hours, including evenings and weekends, and will require approximately 8-12 hours a week. These hours will depend on when participants are available, but some flexibility around the Research Assistant's schedule is possible.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Recruit eligible participants for research projects from the community as well as clinics within the University of Calgary
  • Coordinate and schedule research visits according to study procedures
  • Screen potential participants using structured clinical psychiatric interviews for eligibility
  • Data monitoring, entry, cleaning, scoring, and organizing
  • Undergo training for new methodologies used in the research
  • Collaborate with the study investigators to perform and complete relevant parts of the study, such as obtaining signatures, completing interviews and tasks with participants, discussing questions that come up, etc.
  • Perform delegated functions, such as interviewing and educating participants, completing questionnaires and interviews, etc.
  • Develop informed consent/assent forms
  • Contribute to protocol development by bringing forth feasible ideas for participant recruitment, study design and methodology and participant retention in studies
  • Liaise with all research team members and sponsor/other collaborators
  • Prepare and submit study documents to the ethics boards

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Minimum 1 year of research experience in Psychology or a related-field
  • Some post-secondary education in Psychology or a related-field, Undergraduate degree preferred
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with teens (aged 12-17) and their parents
  • Flexibility and the ability to multi-task and effectively work with all employee groups, dealing with tact and diplomacy in all situations
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
  • Preference will be given to those with Tri-Council Ethics Training, experience conducting structured clinical interviews, and those with Level 1 MRI training
