The Department of Mathematics & Statistics in the Faculty of Science invites applications for 2 part-time student hourly Calculus Development Support Student Graduate Research Assistant

Under the supervision of the Dr. Jerrod Smith the graduate student research assistant will provide research support to conduct environmental scans, literature review, and assessment design.
This position will work remotely, with options for regular on¿site and/or remote meetings with the research team and supervisors.

The research assistant will support a range of activities including, but not limited to:

  • Conducting a literature review related to best practices in specifications grading and credit/no-credit assessment
  • Conduct environmental scan of credit/no-credit courses in first year, with particular attention to introductory calculus courses
  • Support writing and editing learning outcomes.
  • Design initial assessments aligned with learning outcomes.
  • Work with a team to develop and code assessments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Specific goals, accountabilities and deliverables will be set at the time of appointment.

Job Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Calgary.
  • Work independently to manage time and complete multiple complex tasks
  • Provide regular and timely updates on progress, seek guidance and advice when needed
  • Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong qualitative research skills (e.g. conducting literature reviews, analyzing and presenting qualitative data)
  • Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills, including an ability to summarize and translate qualitative data and findings in reports.
  • Leadership, self¿motivation, self¿direction, and an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • At least one candidate will need a background with a procedural language to help code in Webwork.

Salary: $25/hr for Masters student or $29/hr for PhD student 
Hours: 95 hours
Fixed term: Sept. 1, 2024 ¿ June 30, 2025 

Who Can Apply?
Applicants must be graduate students currently enrolled at the University of Calgary. Preference will be given to MATH/STAT/ACSC/BIST/EDUC/ or CPSC graduate students with a strong interest in undergraduate mathematics education.
