The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a W21C Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The W21C is a research and innovation initiative within the O' Brien Institute for Public Health at the University of Calgary. W21C's collaborative space and diverse team program supports and enables health researchers to bring new ideas, prototypes, or health care innovations into the health care environment. One of W21C's primary goals is to attract and support multidisciplinary researchers, clinicians, industry partners, and patients and their families to collaborate on innovative approaches to improve patient safety and quality of care using state-of-the-art health services and research infrastructure.
The W21C Research Associate, Mixed Methods reports to the Director, Research and Innovation at the W21C and will receive direction from the Lead Investigator(s) of the project(s) they are assigned to. 

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Develop, coordinate, and carry out research activities for key mixed methods research studies in consultation with the principal investigator(s) and W21C's Directors
  • Monitor the status of Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board approval for pending and ongoing studies,
  • Work with investigators to submit new applications, annual reports and notification of changes to study design and methods
  • Ensure all stakeholders are kept informed of study's progression
  • Supervise junior project staff and trainees on the research projects
  • Ensure compliance with all hospital and government regulations for research involving human subjects
  • Manage activities and research tasks with various internal and external stakeholders
  • Under limited supervision, perform a range of research and coordination tasks in support of W21C's program objectives
  • Determine project priorities with input from the project leads and W21C's Operations team
  • Deal with complex team and related issues
  • Consults on study design and analysis approaches for the W21C initiative
  • Involvement in full lifecycle of projects including developing research questions, hypotheses and models to analyze data using a mixed methods approach; interpreting qualitative and quantitative data; writing research papers suitable for publication; preparing posters and presentations for projects
  • Provide general support to the W21C program to facilitate the progression of the W21C vision. Potential activities include participation in internal working groups (e.g., Anti-Racism working group), support for event planning and delivery, and contributions to the overall collaborative environment
     

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters level training required, with a preference for training within a health-related field
  • Thesis within a strong research program required
  • Formal mixed-methods research training is an asset
  • 3-4 years progressive experience in coordinating and conducting mixed-methods research
  • Well-developed knowledge and expertise working in the clinical and/or community care setting, particularly conducting research with care providers, physicians, community programs and/or patients
  • Expertise in coordinating and conducting quantitative and qualitative clinical research required
  • Familiarity with mixed methods and the integration and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data
  • Expertise in interview guide development, participant recruitment, and qualitative data analysis
  • Expertise in development of databases, statistical analysis, and report generation
  • Familiarity with qualitative (e.g., NVivo) and quantitative analysis (e.g., SPSS) and database software (e.g., Excel, Access)
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, problem solving, and interpersonal skills required
  • Acts a resource to others
  • Resourceful, innovative, creative, strategic, makes decisions, problem solves
  • Demonstrates initiative, good judgment and concern for detail and accuracy
  • Ability to communicate well with colleagues from various disciplines and external collaborators within a complex initiative
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of study data and participant records
  • Strong written, oral and presentation skills
  • Ability to work in an environment of continuous change and growth
  • Ability to mentor and advise project team members and broader W21C stakeholders on approaches to qualitative research
  • Ability to lead mixed-methods data analysis and develop academic publications and reports from the findings
