The Department of Bio-Medical Engineering within the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Junior Developer (Software, BCI, Gaming). This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Jr. Developer will support and contribute to multiple novel engineering research initiatives within the BCI Engineering Core program, with direct responsibilities for supporting several project-based initiatives. Their primary role will be to assist in developing and maintaining foundational technologies for major research initiatives. The primary location of work is the Schulich School of Engineering, in the department of Biomedical Engineering, with the opportunity to occasionally work remotely or at the Alberta Children's Hospital. This position reports to the Director of the BCI Engineering Core. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. The work hours are regular with some flexibility and generally steady throughout the year, with some exceptions based on project requirements and partner deadlines.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Prepare project related communications including updates for stakeholders and sponsors, and presentations for public or academic audiences.
  • Plan, organize and set-up project team meetings.
  • Provide information and support developing various reports, including annual project reports for sponsors.
  • Consolidate, manage and prepare data from multiple applications, websites, and databases for analysis.
  • Manages their own time effectively and ensures Program leadership is informed of activities and progress of work.
  • Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with other Program team members.
  • Acquire an understanding of the project scope, aims, deliverables, timelines and activities.
  • Acquiring and analyzing EEG, EMG, and other bio-signals.
  • Automating testing pipelines for development projects.
  • Development and distribution of research and commercial software.
  • Implement and apply machine learning techniques.
  • Develop scalable software, quality assurance, and associated best practices.
  • App development for tablets, phones and web-browsers (Swift, React, Kotlin, etc.)

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university, preferably in an engineering, computer science, or similar field
  • Education and/or work experience in: Computer Science, Game Development, Electrical, Software or Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Applied Mathematics, or other related areas.
  • Portfolio demonstrating knowledge in any of the following: inclusive game development and design, software architecture and design, app development (web browser & native), machine learning, scalable software design, and signal processing.
  • Significant experience with multiple scientific programming languages such as Python, C++/C#, JavaScript, R, MATLAB, Java, etc.
  • Significant experience in serious game development using modern technologies (e.g. Unity Engine, Unreal Engine, Godot, Lua, Bevy)
  • Ability and willingness to support a collaborative, team-focused environment
  • Demonstrable experience in software prototyping and development (can provide portfolio on request for evaluation)
  • Significant experience and hands-on knowledge of design processes for complex projects, including working with diverse stakeholders to deliver products within proposed deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and relationship building skills including a high level of comfort interacting with children and parents in a clinical research setting.
  • Strong organizational skills, time management, and the ability to prioritize activities. 
  • The ability to multi-task with ease and efficiency and work in a dynamic environment is required.
  • Strong sense of initiative and willingness to take responsibility for task completion.
  • Knowledge of university policies related to research is required, including research ethics, contracts, agreements, and funding processes.
