Marketing within U of C Continuing Education is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Manager, Marketing and Communications for approximately 12 months.

he Manager, Marketing and Communications, will report to the Director, Marketing, Communications and Academic Innovation, and work collaboratively with Programming Directors, as well as other UCalgary units, including the Office Communications and Community Engagement, and other organizations external to the University. As a strategic lead, they will develop, implement, and measure a marketing and communications strategy for the unit, focused on strengthening and aligning all aspects of communications, marketing and reputation management. They will manage the communications, content and associated channels, to ensure smooth, professional, and innovative marketing and communications. This position is in a fast-moving, innovative environment with a high volume of visible, complex work. 

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Leadership and Strategy

  • Contribute to the development of high impact marketing and communications plans with internal/external partners for all initiatives and coordinate their implementation working alongside the appropriate person(s) within the team or externally.
  • Develop and implement marketing and communication strategies, policies, and procedures, consistent with the University of Calgary and strategic priority areas.
  • Continuously assess and improve the efficiency of team's systems and processes.
  • Attend meetings (team, programming, operations, etc.)
  • Assist in the strategic planning process and in ensuring the implementation of strategic communication plans that are aligned with the overall strategic plan and goals.
  • Make recommendations for cost savings and re-budgeting for the communications portfolio.
  • Provide guidance in preparing detailed budgets and justifications for communications related activities.
  • Provide advice to the senior leadership to effectively allocate and utilize resources to achieve strategic goals and objectives with regards to marketing and communications.
  • Provide strategic advice on the development of marketing and communications plans, financial goals and measures.
  • Coordinate and lead meetings with various teams to ensure clear communication and consistent progress toward project or program goals.
  • Develop tailored communications plans to meet the needs of a diverse group of stakeholders.

Marketing Communications

  • Define strategic positioning and develop a strategic marketing communications plan to raise the profile of the University Continuing and Professional Education.
  • Help develop tailored strategies for each key stakeholder group to ensure the unit reaches a diversity of audiences with our communications and content.
  • Work with the Director and team to design, build and deliver an annual calendar of communications and content for the unit.
  • Work with Director to set key performance indicators and metrics to measure success and report monthly on them.
  • Liaise with and work cooperatively with the Office Communications and Community Engagement to ensure alignment with university's brand and overall institutional communications strategy.
  • Lead the communications team in the development, management, and promotion of the brand and projects.
  • Oversee the production of high-quality materials including articles, annual reports, promotional videos, website, brochures, etc.
  • Manage and build relationships with outside agencies and vendors as required, to ensure all solutions support the brand and the university's goals.
  • Guide and manage partnerships with a diverse array of stakeholders involved in programs and projects.
  • Serve as a point of contact for verbal and written communication with internal and external stakeholders related to various projects.

Team Management 

  • Mentor, direct, and lead communications staff in completion of communications portfolio objectives.
  • Hire, train, and support staff members, including performance management and dismissal.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews, and probation and mid-probation reviews for new hires.
  • Manage complex faculty issues and challenging interpersonal interactions with composure and diplomacy
  • Proactively develop and maintain trustworthy, productive, problem-solving working relationships with colleagues and staff across the university community and external agencies
  • Support team members with development plans and goal setting.
  • Provide guidance to team members regarding project activities, communications challenges, career development, and personal challenges.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, business, or a related field.
  • A master's degree in a related field is an asset.
  • 7+ years marketing and communications experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in leading integrated marketing communications strategy and a marketing communications team.
  • Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience and experience in a progressive leadership role is required.
  • Familiarity with human resource management.
  • Experience with university core business systems is an asset. (e.g., Peoplesoft, eFIN, enterprise reporting, governance)
  • Experience in media relations, issues management, and crisis communication.
  • Experience supporting change and dealing with senior leadership on change management issues.
  • Experience managing budgets and ensuring fiscal responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience with cross-unit communications, initiatives, and/or partnerships.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing material for internal and external audiences.
  • Superior organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills required to deal effectively with complex tasks and multiple priorities and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated project planning skills and experience successfully running impactful, high quality, multi-stakeholder events and initiatives.
  • Fundamental knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Demonstrated experience using Content Management Systems like Drupal and WordPress, including building themes and templates.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Student Management Systems like Destiny One and Learner Management Systems like Desire 2 Learn.
  • Knowledge of web design and development (ex. HTML, JavaScript, CSS, UX, SEO, responsive design, and accessibility best practices).
  • Experience using Google Analytics and Data Studio, and social media reporting platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience with project management agile practices.
  • Demonstrated experience with UX design practices like journey mapping.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and knowledge of project management technology tools such as MS project, Basecamp, Asana, Trello or similar.
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office are required.
  • Ability to delegate, effectively supervise, and plan for the timely and successful completion of short and long-term objectives.
  • Ability to work independently and to accept responsibility for complex and sensitive decision-making
  • Ability to interpret, analyze and disseminate critical information
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with administrative staff and senior leadership in multiple university areas.
  • Ability to negotiate difficult situations and to build positive relationships with colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Experience with fundraising and working with corporate or other donors is an asset.
  • Familiarity with and/or experience the University environment and/or the health sector an asset.
  • Knowledge and understanding of university plans and policies, as well as structure, governance, and decision-making processes is an asset.
