Description

The Department of Production Animal Health in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate, Cattle Welfare and Behaviour. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.  

This position will have an office located at the Foothills Campus; however, occasional travel to W.A Ranches and the CSB Campus may be required.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Research:  The successful applicant will be given an existing data set on beef lameness and will analyses and collaboratively write a scientific publication for journal submission.  This position may support other research projects by providing knowledge, skills, and on-the-job training to others.
  • Youth Education:  This position requires the development of at least 6 web-based learning modules on a variety of aspects of the beef industry to support a web-based certificate aimed at a national audience
  • Produce initial drafts of manuscripts for publication in appropriate scientific journals
  • Provide the Principle Investigators with data and figures for grant submissions, presentations, reports and manuscripts
  • Development of outreach/educational material for youth
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications
  • Manages own time effectively

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Must have a PhD in beef cattle behaviour and welfare
  • Must have direct evidence of scholarly activity (publications) in beef cattle behaviour and welfare
  • Expertise in beef cattle lameness is an asset
  • Experience in the statistical analysis of scientific data
  • Very strong organizational and time management skills are essential
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative manner
  • Must be open to learning and development, and willing to accept new changes and assignments
  • Experience with advance statistical approaches
  • Experience developing educational programs for youth is preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Must be flexible with the ability to prioritize and refocus to meet deadlines
  • Strong work ethic
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of the University of Calgary processes and procedures is desirable
    Ability to develop web-based content and social media skills required
  • Class 5 Drivers license required
