Description

The Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 3 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator. 

This project will consist of assisting in algorithm development and applications in neuromorphic devices.  The Research Assistant's primary purpose will be involved in a research project focused on biologically plausible learning algorithms in spiking neural networks.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Engage in computational modelling and research in biologically plausible learning algorithms in spiking neural networks
  • Aid in the writing of manuscripts
  • Documents data analysis plans and execution
  • Construct models, for collaboration with researchers in scientific presentations and manuscripts and to prepare for publishable manuscripts
  • Trains and mentors other staff members and encourages the development of junior staff (students)
  • Keep work area clean and safe
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree required; MSc in a quantitative discipline preferred (e.g. computer science, mathematics, or physics)
  • 1-3 years of related research experience
  • Experience in quantitative methods, such as differential equations, machine learning, and computational neuroscience is required
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Demonstrate strong communication
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent writing skills with an emphasis on quantitative analysis and computational modelling
  • Excellent English language skills in reading, writing and oral communication
