Description

The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator. 

This position is as a research assistant working on various projects related to psychosocial oncology, and sexuality and assessment research, including a large focus on data analysis. The RA will work with the PI to analyze data from qualitative interviews and to prepare initial results from the thematic coding conducted. The RA may also engage in data entry including qualitative transcription and may also contribute to the drafting of manuscripts. The RA will work with other team members and students on collaborative projects, assisting with research-related tasks as necessary.

This is a recurring part-time position.  Recurring Part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.  

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Qualitative data analysis including skill at different approaches (e.g. interpretive phenomenology, discourse analysis, grounded theory, thematic analysis)
  • Careful deciphering and coding of sexuality-based research content areas
  • Writing for scientific communication
  • Manuscript preparation and submission
  • Reference formatting and management systems
  • Knowledge translation skills including, website design, social media development, graphical content and interactive media development

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required, Degree in Psychology preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of related experience in research assistance/project coordination
  • Experience or interest in developing experience in conducting sexuality-based research
  • Work with or interest in developing competence in working with 2SLGBTQ+ populations
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with NVivo or other qualitative software or analytic tools
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability for professional report/manuscript writing
  • Knowledge of research ethics and regulations for granting agencies (eg. Tri Council)
  • Knowledgeable about diversity, equity and inclusive practices
  • Ability to problem solve in complex situations, and exercise judgment as appropriate
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills, and an ability to work in a team setting
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to take on new challenges
  • Ability to work independently, but to seek support from leadership as needed is an asset
  • Familiarity with sexuality-based constructs (e.g. function, well-being, activity, orientation, gender identity), and/or sexual assessment tools (e.g. female sexual function index, international index of erectile function, sexual distress scale)
