Environment, Health and Safety in VP Services is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Safety Specialist.

The Safety Specialist reports to the Team Lead, Operations. Working as part of a campus-wide Environmental, Health and Safety team, the specialist provides expert technical knowledge and consultation services to faculties and departments at the University of Calgary.

The EHS Consultant provides direction and consultation services to management with respect to integrating EHS into their operations. The EHS Consultant is responsible for providing direction to management teams to implement the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) requirements, which align with the Alberta OHS Act, Regulation, Code, and other applicable legislation. The Safety Specialist is expected to work independently with minimal direct supervision, utilizing strong analytical, problem solving, time and change management skills. The individual works in an interdependent way with other health and safety professionals within the EHS team to conceive and deliver improvements to the management system and programs including, but not limited to, hazard assessment and control, training, inspection, and incident investigation. The individual is relied upon by the EHS team to provide subject matter expertise and act a resource for colleagues with less experience.
 

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Provide consultation services to multiple University Faculty/Business Unit to support the implementation and operation of the University's OHSMS
  • Build, nurture and maintain relationships between EHS and Faculties/Business Units
  • Ensure that EHS perspectives are considered in proposed business plans, decisions and organizational changes
  • Build skill and knowledge capacity within assigned areas that will assist them to implement/maintain the OHSMS to meet or exceed the University requirements
  • Provide consultation to all levels of Management, Vice Presidents, Associate Vice Presidents, Deans, Associate Deans, Directors, Managers etc.to assist them in understanding and meeting their legal obligations and responsibilities under the Alberta OHS Act, Regulation and Code
  • Foster a proactive and positive relationship with key stakeholders within the institution and externally
  • Represent the University of Calgary to external OHS groups where input is desirable and/or required
  • Participate in developing metrics for the OHS component of performance evaluations for all employees
  • Work with the EH&S team and in consultation with University stakeholders, develop Policies, Codes of Practice and Safe Work Procedures which ensure compliance with the Alberta OHS Act, Regulation, Code and other applicable legislation
  • Act as an expert technical resource as required
  • Produce and/or review safety training materials and provide and/or advise on safety training
  • Participate in the investigation of incidents and lead investigations for serious incidents to ensure that causal factors and corrective actions are identified
  • Utilize expert health and safety knowledge to assist with the development of University OHS program elements and related activities
  • Utilize technical expertise and knowledge of the University operations/culture to establish University health and safety standards
     

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • University degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field such as Engineering, Science or an equivalent combination of experience and education is required
  • Minimum of 5-7 years' experience in an Occupational Health and Safety role
  • Preference for one of the following designations (CRSP, CSP, P.Eng., CIH, ROH) or eligibility and willingness to pursue such accreditation
  • Expert knowledge of OHS legislation and regulations, as well as standard industry practices
  • Expert knowledge of OHSMS, audit processes, hazard assessment and control, inspection process, investigation techniques, determination of training requirements and emergency response
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence decision making in a supportive and constructive manner is essential
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the commitment to work in a team environment
  • Demonstrated report-writing skills
  • Understanding of University operations is an asset Possess a valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's Licence
