The Information Technology is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Electronic Technologist .

As an integral function within the Services portfolio, the Information Technologies (IT) organization is a key stakeholder and contributor. IT provides essential computing, network, and media services in support of learning, teaching, research, and administration at the University of Calgary.

The technology strategy at the University of Calgary recognizes the dual responsibility of technology within the academy. It must meet the expectation that technology is available, reliable, and ubiquitous, while also enabling an environment of learning and discovery by supporting the teaching and research communities.

The position reports to the Manager Com/Media and involves medium-high volume, highly variable workloads. The role involves managing a high volume of diverse tasks, which range from routine to complex issues. The project cycle includes peak periods with stringent deadlines. The candidate is responsible for making informed decisions regarding the installation and repair of media systems. The impact of these decisions extends from the department level to various Faculties. The individual is responsible for the timely and error-free delivery of audio-visual services to the campus community. This role does not support a work-from-home policy, emphasizing the importance of in-person collaboration. There may also be a requirement for after-hours work, depending on the nature of the tasks at hand.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • The role involves ensuring the effective installation, monitoring, and maintenance of Audio-Visual technical systems.
    • Plan and design these systems to meet the current and future needs of the University of Calgary.
    • Resolve problems with systems and services successfully and in a timely manner.
    • Provide accurate and reliable technical advice and consultation, and handle the configuration, integration, and programming of control systems.
  • Efficiently delivering, setting up, and returning equipment to designated areas.
  • Operating and maintaining equipment to ensure optimal customer service, and ensuring prompt and effective resolution of technical issues, either independently or through collaboration.
  • Addressing complex issues using independent judgment and implement practical solutions, while comprehending and complying with all policies of the Faculty, IT, and the University of Calgary.
  • Maintain productive liaison arrangements with other units on campus and external entities.
  • Provide unbiased and accurate information to the Technical Supervisor/Manager regarding personnel decisions.
  • Offer effective consultation to the University and external clients on events utilizing audio/visual technology.
  • Create and maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Ask questions, provide suggestions, and offer support and training where appropriate.
  • Involve the Manager Comm/Media or other team members as needed. Accurately update ServiceNow precision and completeness.
  • Keep precise track of media equipment locations.
  • Organize and prioritize incoming tasks while managing competing priorities.
  • Follow standard procedures for tracking and escalating incidents.
  • Understand client's requirements and ensure they are informed and updated on related work.
  • Maintain accurate records of all work using designated tools.
  • Proactively implement or introduce innovative approaches to IT problems and client requests to the team.
  • Adjust to evolving challenges and responsibilities as the unit's structure changes, provide support outside of scheduled hours as needed, and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • May possess a Post-Secondary Degree/Diploma in Broadcast Technologies/Computer Sciences, along with 4-6 years of experience in the industry or a related field.
  • Should have well-developed theoretical and practical knowledge of audio, video, and networking, including the maintenance and repair of sound, projection, and control systems, design setup, configuration of network systems and protocols.
  • Proficiency in computer literacy, including Word, Excel, Access, CAD design, and internet research, is essential.
  • If not already certified, the candidate should aim to complete the Avixa CTS credential within two years.
  • Should have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to translate technical information for clients with little or no technical background, and to translate customer needs into service requests.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform manual labor (e.g., lifting) related to equipment.
  • A valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
