The Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering within the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Associate GRI (Energy Systems). This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 23 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Associate will report to the Principal Investigator and will work with the Principal Investigator on energy systems assessment and emissions and pollution. The incumbent is fully responsible for gathering, assessment, analysis, and documentation of data sets associated with energy systems with integration of emissions and pollution data. The deliverables include, the development of socioeconomic-technical modelling approaches for energy systems, energy security, energy poverty, statistical assessment of data, and interpretation of large global geospatial data sets

As a member of the research team, they will be expected to participate in group meetings, report regularly on progress as requested, present posters and presentations at various events and coordinate the research with other members. The Research Associate will also engage with industry, government, other academic institutions, and other potential collaborators for this project.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • The incumbent will research energy systems including analysis of emissions and pollutants.
  • Collaborative research within the Research Group as well as other collaborators on the project.
  • Disseminate and present results to industry, scientific audiences and the public.
  • Prepare and write technical papers, journal publications and reports.
  • Prepare progress reports.
  • Take on a leadership role in the research group, including contributing to administrative and technical tasks.
  • Apply for external fellowships and assist, where appropriate, with grant proposal writing and the membership of junior trainees.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD in environmental and/or chemical engineering is required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in geospatial modelling.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant research experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within team environments is essential.
  • Experience in the scientific method of planning, developing, reviewing, and reporting modelling studies.
  • Advanced knowledge of energy systems and emissions/pollution research methods.
  • Advanced knowledge of plastics combustion as used for fuel.
  • Demonstrated budget management abilities.
  • Strong computer programming skills (STAT18, Arc GIS Pro, PAGE09, GraphPad PRISM, Matlab, Python).
  • Demonstrated leadership, teamwork skills, strong organizational and excellent interpersonal skills as well as excellent time management skills are required.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Must be self-motivated and work with minimal supervision.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail.
