Description

The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Lung Cancer Clinical Data Capture Specialist. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the GLR Program manager and will receive direction from the Principal Investigator and Research Associate(s) of the project(s) to which they are assigned.

In this role, they will primarily be responsible for reviewing medical charts from lung cancer patients and entering data into the established research database. They will also ensure clinical database integrity for by adhering to established data entry procedures, monitoring data quality, and suggesting improvements.

With minimal supervision, the candidate will work independently on day-to-day duties, providing direct support to the Research Project Manager, Principal Investigator and other team members.

The primary purpose of this position is to populate the Glans-Look Research database with accurate information from lung cancer patient charts and perform quality assurance measures on datasets.  Other tasks include contributing to data reports and mentoring students.  

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Reviews patient medical records and charts to abstract research data
  • Enters data into databases in a highly accurate manner
  • Maintain optimal data recording practices and confidentiality
  • Collect and maintain data logs
  • Perform regular quality control checks on data entries
  • Contribute to protocol development by bringing forth feasible ideas for patient recruitment, study design and methodology and patient retention in studies
  • Make recommendations to policy or procedural changes as needed
  • Maintain established programs and procedures
  • Assist in recruitment of eligible subjects for research projects by checking charts and other sources
  • Recruit and explain research to study participants as necessary
  • Advise on the development informed consent forms, source documents worksheets and case report forms
  • Administrative duties including organization and filing of confidential study records
  • Other administrative duties as required

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Minimum three years of progressive research experience with demonstrated knowledge of clinical oncology data collection
  • Completion of post-secondary education in a health, science, or related discipline is required
  • A Master's degree, clinical trials background, or medical training would be an asset
  • Experience with chart reviews and data input in oncology is essential
  • Specific training in medical terminology preferred
  • Understanding of the clinical aspects of lung cancer and familiarity with basic science research would be an asset
  • The ideal candidate will have experience using electronic data capture software and familiarity with Connect Care electronic medical record software
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
  • Knowledge of research methodology and administrative processes, including research ethics, grant and manuscript writing is an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, time management and organizational skills
  • Fluent in English; exceptional written and verbal communication
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
