Postdoctoral Scholar Position

Area:  Carbon Dioxide Utilization Analysis

Duration: One year, with possibility of renewal

Start date: Immediate

Salary:  $60,000 CAD per annum, plus University of Calgary Plan C health benefits

The Department of Engineering in the Faculty of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Carbon Dioxide Utilization. 

Job Description:

The successful applicant will build on existing models to establish a consistent techno-economic and life cycle environmental evaluation framework  to evaluate emerging carbon conversion technologies (CCT) in the Canadian context. The resulting model will be used to support process- and system-level optimization, representation of CCT¿s in an energy system model, and to identify efficient and effective deployment scenarios for CCTs. They will work closely with students and project co-investigators at the University of Calgary and University of Toronto, and have the opportunity to travel for presentation of their work at domestic and, possibly, international conferences. They will also be expected to support development of research project proposals and mentor graduate (PhD and MSc) students working on related projects. 

Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline and will have demonstrated skills in system-level modeling and analysis (i.e., LCA or TEA). Clear interest in innovation and interdisciplinary work. 
  • The candidate must have been awarded a PhD or equivalent within the five years immediately preceding the job posting date.
  • Experience with process simulation (e.g., using Aspen Plus/HYSYS, Symmetry) and life cycle assessment tools (e.g., OpenLCA, Brightway2), databases (e.g., ecoinvent), and methods.
  • Experience with modeling and data representation in Python, including packages such as SciPy, numpy, Pyomo, and Plotly.
  • Strong written communication skills, preferably demonstrated in writing of peer-review publication and technical reports.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary group involving students and faculty from a range of backgrounds, as well as external stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint). 
  • Efficient organizational and time management skills in setting priorities and accomplishing tasks within deadlines.
  • Must be located in or willing to relocate to Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
