Description

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Research Data Analyst. This Full-time Fixed Short Term position is for approximately 3 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator. 

The Research Data Analyst will assist in finalizing a research project using data compiled from samples collected by our Northern partners during harvests of muskoxen. Left hind feet are being collected and shipped to Calgary for examination. Full examination has been executed of macroscopic characteristics (morphometrics, lesion presence), but also radiographs and assessment of cross sections of the hoof.

The primary role of the position is describing and analyzing the data of all muskoxen feet and analyze associations with age, harvest location and other animal characteristics as available through the Community Based Wildlife Health Surveillance system (CBWHS) based out of the Kutz laboratory at the UCVM.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Uses the data base available through the CBWHS to extract the necessary data for analysis
  • Uses the existing data for description of normal and abnormal muskoxen feet and lesions present
  • Understands not just foot anatomy and pathology, but also a good understanding of wildlife health and surveillance and this affects the data quality
  • Can establish strong relationships within the different labs involved with wildlife health surveillance
  • Good skills of independent working and development of research questions and the analytic approaches to analyses

Qualifications / Requirements:

The successful applicant needs to have a thorough understanding of hoof anatomy, hoof physiology, hoof pathology for the descriptive part of the study. This includes understanding of interpretation of radiographs, and macroscopic abnormalities of feet related structures. Secondly, good analytical skills with the use of the statistical package R as well as running regression models with random and fixed effects to correct for year of sampling and other contributing factors. Finally, good skills in independently deliver a solid draft of a scientific paper that can be submitted for peer-review.
