The Advancing Canadian Water Assets Team in the Office of VP Research invites applications for a Analytical Chemistry Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Advancing Canadian Water Assets (ACWA) is a $38.5m facility focused on supporting research, development, piloting, demonstration and de-risking of leading-edge wastewater treatment technology, plus evaluation of associated receiving environment effects. Its mandate is to facilitate the transformation of today's wastewater treatment into tomorrow's innovative technologies for sustainable resource recovery and enhanced environmental performance.

Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, this position requires a critical thinker and problem solver who is committed to quality assurance / quality control and customer service. The successful candidate will possess the experience and commitment to contribute to a team working to solve complex environmental chemistry and wastewater treatment problems.

This position's primary purpose is to contribute to research and service projects conducted for ACWA researchers and clients, and assisting with other duties in ACWA's analytical chemistry laboratory. As part of the larger ACWA team, the Analytical Chemistry Technician contributes to experimental design, performs chemical analyses and data analysis, and writes reports with guidance from more senior team members.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Project work such as set up, analysis and reporting of experiments.
  • Conduct service project work, including method implementation, development & validation, in collaboration with other ACWA team members.
  • Purchase supplies and materials needed for service projects.
  • Perform data analysis and report writing.
  • Lead project planning, scoping, tracking and proposal writing, including developing cost estimates where required.
  • Daily operation and maintenance of assigned laboratory instruments.
  • Set up, run, and dismantle equipment for lab analyses.
  • Conduct general laboratory operations, including routine cleaning and maintenance of lab equipment and instruments.
  • Conduct laboratory instrument troubleshooting and repair when directed by the ACWA Lab Manager.
  • Recommend changes to methods, procedures or practices, as needed.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters or BSc in analytical chemistry.
  • A related degree (e.g., environmental science or environmental engineering) with strong lab experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum 5 years' laboratory experience, work term or equivalent.
  • Able to work as part of a highly technical team.
  • Experience with LCMS instrumentation is highly desirable.
  • Experience with any of the following analytical instruments is an asset: Discrete analyzer, TOC analyzer, or Spectroscopic equipment.
  • Experience with laboratory method development is an asset.
  • Some experience in a wastewater treatment department (municipality or industry) or a related environmental consulting company is an asset.
  • As ACWA is located in south Calgary and is not accessible by transit, access to suitable personnel transportation (or reliable alternatives) is necessary.
  • Occasional weekend work may be required.
