The School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), Division of Music invites applications for sessional instructors to teach the following courses in the Spring and Summer 2025.

Lectures for the spring 2025 term run from May 5 to June 16, and lectures for the summer 2025 term run from June 30 to August 12; however, some course offerings may run for three weeks rather than six weeks. Individual course dates are noted below; please see the academic schedule for additional important dates and deadlines.

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING COURSE OFFERINGS ARE TENTATIVE, PENDING SUFFICIENT ENROLMENTS. THERE MAY BE ROFR CANDIDATES FOR SOME OF THE COURSES.

SPRING 2025

MUSI 203 Jazz History

Dates: May 5 - June 16, 2025, Monday and Wednesday 18:00 - 20:45 
Description: Directed listening and analysis of jazz forms from the early beginnings of jazz to the present. Styles examined range from Early Jazz to Jazz-Rock Fusion. Major figures considered include: Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • At least a Master's in Music and/or equivalent professional experience 
  • Research interest or focus on Jazz and Jazz History (in terms of academic work and performance)
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver curriculum at the post-secondary level to students from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Successful teaching record for large lecture sections and experience grading academic work

MUSI 306.06 Topics in Music and Popular Culture (Progressive Rock)

Dates: May 5 - June 16, 2025, Monday and Wednesday 13:00 - 15:45 
Description: A multimedia survey course exploring the genre of popular music known as Progressive Rock. The course will include an examination of Progressive Rock's early history from its psychedelic beginnings, through its heyday in the 1970s, and its legacy in the 1980s and beyond. Discussions will center on a survey of some of Progressive Rock's most well-known icons and will include detailed analyses and in-depth discussions of their works. All lectures will be presented online in video format.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in Music and/or equivalent professional experience 
  • Research interest or focus on Progressive Rock music (in terms of both academic work and performance)
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver curriculum at the post-secondary level to students from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Successful teaching record for large lecture sections and experience grading academic work

MUSI 306.17 Topics in Music and Popular Culture (Campus Choir II)

Dates: May 5 - June 16, 2025, Tuesday and Thursday 16:00 - 18:45
Description: The performance of contemporary popular choral music

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • At least a Master's in Music and/or equivalent professional experience 
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to conduct and work with ensembles at the post-secondary level.
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver curriculum at the post-secondary level to students from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Experience grading academic work
  • Strong organizational and professional skills

SUMMER 2025

MUSI 209 Introduction to Music Theory for Non-Majors

Dates: June 30 - August 12, 2025, Tuesday and Thursday 09:00 - 11:55
Description: Introduction to the materials of music through development of both aural and written skills.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • At least a Master's degree in Music Theory or Composition and/or equivalent professional experience 
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver music theory curriculum at the post-secondary level 
  • Successful teaching record for lecture courses and experience grading academic work

MUSI 306.04 Topics in Music and Popular Culture (The Music of Led Zeppelin)

Dates: June 30 - August 12, 2025, Tuesday and Thursday 13:00 - 15:55 
Description: A multimedia survey course exploring the music of Led Zeppelin, including an examination of the band's history from their pre-Zeppelin beginnings through their rise to superstardom. Discussions will center on an album-by-album survey of the band's music and will include detailed analyses of significant works.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in Music and/or equivalent professional experience 
  • Research interest or focus on the music of Led Zeppelin (in terms of both academic work and performance)
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver curriculum at the post-secondary level to students from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Successful teaching record for large lecture sections and experience grading academic work

MUSI 306.10 Topics in Music and Popular Culture (History of the Blues)

Dates: June 30 - August 12, 2025, Tuesday and Thursday 18:00 - 20:55
Description: Study of the impact of the Blues on performers in the history of commercial music, focusing on selected performers such as The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, James Brown or Jimi Hendrix.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • At least a Master's in Music and/or equivalent professional experience 
  • Research interest or focus on both popular music in general and blues music (in terms of academic work and performance)
  • Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver curriculum at the post-secondary level to students from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Successful teaching record for large lecture sections and experience grading academic work
