The Department of Clinical Neurosciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Lab Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Research Manager. 

The Lab Technician will play a pivotal role in supporting the "CaPRI Project" focused on Parkinson's Disease (PD). The incumbent may support other research projects by providing knowledge, skills, and on-the-job training to others.  This position works closely with the Principal Investigator in areas of protocol development, standard operating protocol development, development of research projects and proposals, contribute to and assist in submitting research grants proposals.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Generate high-quality, reproducible data to meet project objectives
  • Support the lab's mission to elucidate molecular mechanisms in PD and identify therapeutic strategies. Assist with plans and designs for specialized applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and services
  • Foster a collaborative and productive lab environment
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications
  • Oversee reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment for various users, including stocking of all necessary materials and supplies
  • Keep laboratory and work area clean and safe
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelors, Masters degree or PhD in Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, or a related field
  • Specialized training or certification in laboratory techniques related to molecular and cellular biology is desirable
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant laboratory experience, including experience with primary cell cultures and mouse models
  • Proficiency in techniques such as Western blotting, qPCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, and live-cell imaging
  • Experience in managing laboratory operations and supervising junior staff
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in data analysis software and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Understanding of safety codes and standards in a laboratory setting (WHMIS certification preferred)
  • Ability to learn and implement new technologies as they evolve
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
