Description

The Department of Radiology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Medical Radiation Technologist. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) will work with the Operations Manager and Medical Director as part of a team at the MoJo. The MRT performs imaging for diagnostic purposes and completes analysis within the scope of the MoJo. The Technologist must ensure that the scans are done reliably and with the best possible repeatability and precision. This requires a high level of concentration, judgment and extensive knowledge of anatomy and pathology in order to decide on how to conduct the scan for each subject as errors at this stage in the study would have a detrimental impact on the analysis and interpretation of results at later stages.

Ability to travel internationally; ad hoc travel to USA and other international sites is required.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Project Management

  • Prepare area for research project support
  • Liaise and refer with Scientific and Health Care teams as appropriate
  • Collaborate with study teams to determine feasibility of project within Centre
    • Technical parameter development
    • Assist in development of protocol implementation
    • Processing of regulatory documentation
    • Assist with the development and delivery of technical study information to ensure participants understand appropriate information prior to scanning
  • Identify educational opportunities and other resources to support physicians, scientists, and study teams in their research studies
  • Review and identify project limitations during intake as they pertain to the equipment and technologist's role
  • Correspond with manager to make suggestions for overcoming these limitations and/or works with study teams and technical staff to schedule mock appointments for testing a full run through of requirements

Data Analysis

  • Conduct regular analysis on clinical EOS images for orthopaedic surgeons, DXA analysis, HR-pQCT analysis, as well as create and maintain reports as necessary
  • Assist in obtaining, preparing, writing, and compiling materials for physicians, scientists, and ethics as necessary
  • Ensure projects are handled in an effective and efficient manner while recognizing the importance of maintaining documentation for each study supported within the Centre

Quality Assurance and Evaluation

  • Assist in developing technical Standard Operating Procedures to maintain regulatory compliance and recommend the development of policies to support initiatives as appropriate
  • Manage and oversee technical competency of staff and students using the various equipment in the MoJo and correspond with manager to make suggestions on whether further training is necessary
  • Support the evaluation and reporting of activities in the Centre, including the management and documentation of EOS reporting for the Spine Foundation or DXA for various studies
  • Train and mentor new staff and students on equipment and through technical workflows as appropriate
  • Preventative Maintenance program on multiple modalities and address equipment errors as necessary
    • Maintain the operational readiness and quality control of the equipment, including radiation safety equipment
    • Conduct inspections, perform moderately complex troubleshooting
    • Correct and report as appropriate
    • Ensure calibration standards achieved for specific study requirements
    • Maintain cleanliness and the prevention of contamination between scans

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Graduate of a recognized Medical Radiology program
  • Additional undergraduate degree preferred
  • Active registration with the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists (ACMDTT) is required
  • Enhanced practice authorization from the ACMDTT in CT from the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) and Computed Tomography Imaging Certificate (CTIC) are preferred
  • Certification by the Canadian Society of Clinical Bone Densitometry (CSCD), or by an equivalent program, such as that offered by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD), is an asset
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support, Healthcare Provider (BCLS-HCP)
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience performing digital radiography studies is preferred
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience performing computed tomography studies is preferred
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience performing bone mineral densitometry (BMD) using a Hologic or Lunar scanner is considered an asset
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to travel internationally; ad hoc travel to USA and other international sites is required
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and accurately perform work
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and courtesy in dealing with patients, staff and physicians
  • Ability to consent patients who are participating in research and assist them in completing questionnaires
  • Practices effective radiation protection, infection control and safety techniques as applicable
  • Intermediate computer skills in MO suite
