Description

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 15 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator and will have accountabilities from other senior team members.

This position will play an important role in leading an implementation study aimed at increasing referrals to the Geriatric Preoperative Clinic in Calgary, AB. The research coordinator will lead a cluster randomized stepped wedge trial using multi-method analysis across three surgical clinics in Calgary, AB. The research coordinator will be responsible for working with each clinic to create a clinic-customized implementation strategy and provide ongoing support for the duration of the post-implementation phase. This will include relationship building with the clinics, training and education on the implementation strategy, adapting the strategy to each unique clinic, and problem solving around implementation challenges. Evaluation of the implementation strategy will include data collection from chart reviews and surveys and interviews from staff who participated in implementation. The research coordinator will also be responsible for participant recruitment, performing interviews, and data extraction from chart reviews. Throughout the duration of the project, the research coordinator will be expected to carry out data management as per U of C policies.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Implementation:

  • Under limited supervision, responsible for performing a range of research coordination tasks in support of the research project's objectives
  • Carry out educational and training sessions at implementation sites. This includes organization of the above sessions with the clinic managers, creation of the presentations and training sessions, and administration of post evaluation surveys and interviews
  • Coordinate and schedule research sessions and visits according to study procedures
  • Provide ongoing support to each implementation site and adapt implementation tools/strategy in the postimplementation phase to sustain implementation
  • Perform participant recruitment for post-implementation surveys and interviews

Administration:

  • Have an extensive knowledge of ongoing research projects
  • Perform chart reviews
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed records of collected data
  • Ensure data entry is accurate and precise and is entered in a timely manner according to research protocols
  • Prepare and submit study documents to relevant ethic boards, CROs, and sponsors
  • Aide in ethics submissions, revisions, and annual approvals process
  • Amend study protocols and consents as required
  • Assist with initial drafts of manuscripts for publication and appropriate scientific journals
  • Contribute to protocol development by bringing forth feasible ideas for participant recruitment, study design and methodology

Communication/Relationships:

  • Maintain ongoing communication with the collaborative team and implementation sites
  • Takes a leadership role in maintaining the research project by communicating with allied health professionals and staff, ensuring that protocols are followed
  • Good relationships are developed and maintained with University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services staff within the implementation sites and various stakeholders

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters degree in health related field, or equivalent required
  • At least two years of experience in a clinical research position, past experience in implementation research is considered an asset
  • Experience in geriatric medicine or surgical specialty is considered an asset
  • Experience with hospital staff and in the hospital setting is an asset
  • Knowledge of University policies including submission of projects to ethics boards
  • Ability to manage competing priorities on multiple projects
  • Fluent in English; excellent communication skills
  • Computer literacy MS Windows, Word, Excel, MS Outlook and MS Access
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Must be able to work independently and with others
  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated technical dexterity, knowledge, organizational, interpersonal, administrative skills and skills working with computer technology
  • Demonstrated ability to function independently and within a team environment
  • Strong leadership, communication and decision-making skills required
  • Quality data entry
