Description

The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Team Lead. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator and will provide team leadership and expertise in relation to scientific project management and operations of a multi-million dollar complex breast cancer research program. Working collaboratively across the team and with external stakeholders, the Research Team Lead will ensure that project scope, budget, and deliverables are appropriately executed in collaboration with the Principal Investigator and research team members.

The Research Team Lead's primary role will be to direct and manage the administrative processes of the research program. This includes developing and implementing research projects as well as directing staff research activities. The Research Team Lead will be required to define and communicate project performance expectations to students and staff, monitor project progress, use their leadership skills to guide students and staff through changes in research programs, and assist students and staff to resolve research-related problems.  It will be expected the Research Team Lead will coach students and staff and use their own scientific judgment and discretion to guide projects.

This is a recurring part-time position working about 10 hours a week.  Recurring Part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.  

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Project Direction and Leadership:

  • Direct and manage the research program
  • Developed and implement scientific vision
  • Establish and maintain multi-faceted research team
  • Motivate and provide in-scope supervision to team members
  • Oversee research progress and adjust project objectives as necessary
  • Oversee development of technical protocols
  • Contribute to departmental administration (organizing meetings, journal club, seminar series)
  • Oversee the development and management of the program budget
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility with respect to cost of experiments, technology, external collaborations, and travel
  • Oversee management of legal issues related to research (i.e. ethics, MTAs, IP)
  • Coordinate the assembly and submission of papers for publication
  • Coordinate the assembly and submission of provincial and national grants to obtain funding
  • Seek out new opportunities and provide recommendations to enhance technology and support systems
  • Liaise between project Funders, Research Team, and Executive Committee to ensure all parties involved remain engaged and aware of project progress and issues

Use of technical knowledge & expertise

  • Provide expert oversight on technical matters
  • Authoring or contributing to abstracts/manuscripts for publication
  • Oversee the design, implementation, optimization for technical aspects of new research projects
  • Collaborate in designing research projects that will attract external funding as well as lead to peer-reviewed high-impact publications

Communication

  • Establish and maintain visible and active engagement with key opinion leaders, professional societies, and academic institutions
  • Oversee completion of semi-annual and annual reports
  • Develop presentations to report scientific progress
  • Act as a liaison to provide communication between research teams, supervisors, and funders
  • Coach and mentor staff and students

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters or PhD. in related field preferred
  • Experience hiring and managing staff in a unionized environment an asset
  • Advanced knowledge of research administrative procedures is required.
  • Excellent leadership and organizational skills
  • Must possess above-average interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-directed, enthusiastic and honest in performance of duties
  • Ability to manage time effectively and determine priorities as well as delegate tasks appropriately
  • Hold a superior understanding of the University environment including the Business Administrative System (BAS) including PeopleSoft and Efin
  • Successful grant writing skills with a track record of obtaining grant-funding
  • Knowledgeable in writing medical/scientific research protocols
  • Experience in writing medical/scientific literature for publication; strong scientific and academic writing skills required
  • Proficiency with databases, database design, statistical software and electronic medical records
  • Knowledge of research design and basic knowledge of biostatistics
  • Experience in working with internal/external teams to manage and grow a project and/or program
  • Extensive knowledge of patient privacy policies, FOIP
