The Department of Family Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position will support research projects within the Department of Family Medicine and the Southern Alberta Primary Care Research Network (SAPCReN).  SAPCReN is a network of community family physicians and academic researchers working together to answer timely and relevant questions from real-world primary care practice. The incumbent is expected to work closely with SAPCReN and other project staff in the execution of research protocols and programs, specifically as they relate to qualitative data collection, analysis and interpretation. The position will require involvement in multiple research tasks with both internal and external stakeholders, but will primarily focus on the SPARK Implementation Study. 

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Coordinating and carrying out research activities of key research studies in consultation with the principal investigator and research team leadership
  • Under limited supervision, responsible for performing a range of research tasks in support of study objectives
  • Working as part of a team to achieve objectives
  • Providing support to research assistants and students
  • Keeping stakeholders informed
  • Assisting with and completing applications (e.g., ethics, grants) and development of research protocols
  • Collaborating with the study investigators to perform and complete relevant parts of the study, such as obtaining consent signatures, discussing questions that come up, coordinating and facilitating workshops or focus groups, etc.
  • Make recommendations to policy or procedural changes as needed
  • Participant recruitment and data collection
  • Analysis and interpretation of data
  • Assisting with report writing, production of research papers suitable for publication, and supporting knowledge translation activities
  • Maintaining participant and research data confidentiality

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree at a minimum in a health-related field, with a preference for a Master's degree, with training in qualitative research methods.
  • A minimum 3 years related work experience in a research setting, particularly conducting research with physicians and patients
  • 1-3 years experience conducting qualitative health research. Community-based, health services research, or implementation research experience is an asset
  • Intermediate software and database experience required with proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with NVivo is an asset
  • Experience with specific research activities: participant recruitment, qualitative data collection and analysis, developing and maintaining ethics applications, writing manuscripts and reports, assisting with grants and funding applications
  • Experience with qualitative research activities: developing interview or focus group guides; conducting interviews, focus groups, observations; transcription, coding and data analysis
  • Communication skills, organizational skills, problem solving skills, and interpersonal skills required
  • Resourceful, innovative, creative, strategic, problem solves
  • Good judgment and concern for detail and accuracy
  • Ability to receive direction, collaborate with others in setting goals, and work effectively in teams to achieve agreed upon goals
  • Ability to work independently and promote good teamwork
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and courtesy dealing with patients, staff, and physicians
  • Ability to communicate well with colleagues from various disciplines and external collaborators within a complex initiative
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of participant records
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Experience with qualitative software packages (NVivo)
