Description

The Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Data Analyst. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Data Analyst will report directly to the Owerko Centre Cohort Platform Manager at the Owerko Centre. The Owerko center is an interdisciplinary research centre with a focus on researching child development and neurodevelopmental disorders. The Owerko Centre hosts several longitudinal cohort studies which have been targeted to be included within the Owerko Cohort Platform, a data sharing initiative within the Owerko Centre. Daily work activities would include data management, data cleaning, and documentation creation (including data dictionaries, and standard practices) in collaboration with the Owerko Centre Cohort Manager and other team members and database staff. 

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Data Management

  • Creating coding blocks to handle and manipulate data stored in .csv, SPSS, and excel formats
  • Searching for, obtaining, and reviewing literature to fill in metadata for assessments and other data
  • Maintains database results by setting and enforcing standards and controls
  • Using technical skills to solve problems encountered during data manipulation and analysis through use of best practices and established processes and procedures
  • Ability to demonstrate assigned and scheduled tasks are done on own initiative and that results are beneficial to the success of the research project
  • Requires flexibility and the ability to handle change with ease

Building Documentation

  • Building Data Dictionaries and conversion charts for harmonization
  • Working with database staff and Owerko Cohort Platform Manager to harmonize cohort meta data
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations
  • Clear and accurate database related documentation outlining steps performed in the analysis

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree in data science, Information Systems/Informatics, or another data driven field is required, masters preferred
  • A minimum of 2 years of large data handling experience (preferably epidemiological data)
  • Experience manipulating data using coding software (such as R, or Python) and data capturing software (i.e. REDCap)
  • Demonstrated commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong command of Microsoft Suite (including Excel and Access)
  • Ability to manage tasks independently
  • Strong writing skills with ability to write functional documentation
  • Ability to troubleshoot
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals in other departments
  • High degree of judgement, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience utilizing big data or with data management is an asset
