The Undergraduate Program in the Werklund School of Education is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Field Experience Advisor.

The Field Experience/Career Advisor is responsible for providing field experience, career and general student advice to undergraduate students in the Werklund School of Education (WSE). 
Reporting to the Manager, Undergraduate Programs in Education (UPE), this is a collaborative position and the incumbent will work closely with the Senior Specialist, Field Experience/ Careers 
and the Directors on Field Experience and Career processes. The Field Experience/ Career Advisor works in a team environment and will work with other UPE staff, students, school personnel and other stakeholders.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Advise current students on the field experience component of the program and respond to inquiries. Provide referrals to other Faculty and University services, where appropriate.
  • Administer field placements for the program including data input of schools/partner teachers.
  • Provide positive and sustained communications with schools.
  • Ensure timely and fair placements for all students in the program in adherence with established policies and procedures.
  • Update records in the field database and ensure that student personal and program information, school and partner teacher information is kept up to date.
  • Prepare mileage claim and other field experience expense reports, in accordance with established procedures.
  • Act as scribe for internal and external Field Experience meetings.
  • Provide accurate information on the BEd programs to prospective and current students with regards to eligibility, admission, progression, graduation, and certification.
  • Advise BEd students on the development of and identification of transferable career skills to meet the needs of the profession.
  • Develop and create new resources and delivery patterns for career skills and opportunities for BEd students.
  • Develop and facilitate career workshops and panels in person and online.
  • Develop electronic resources and website content to support students in career skills.
  • Partner with CCPD at the University of Calgary by supporting centrally hosted networking events, career fairs and other opportunities for BEd students.
  • Organize, promote, and participate in Undergraduate Programs and Field Experience Information Sessions throughout the academic year.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A minimum undergraduate degree in a relevant field.
  • Three years of directly related experience in post-secondary advising (student services, student affairs, career coaching and/or academic advising) is required.
  • Understanding of  undergraduate  programs  and  requirements  for  admission, progression, and graduation/certification would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated exceptional communication, interpersonal, negotiation and organizational skills, including the ability to build strong networks with external stakeholders and other faculties/departments is required.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple competing priorities and deadlines is required
  • Demonstrated commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
  • Experience in facilitating workshops/ large presentations would be an asset
  • Ability to work independently in a confidential setting and demonstrate good judgment in dealing with sensitive situations is required
  • Strong ability to multi-task due to the growth of the unit and subsequent changes in responsibilities is required
  • An understanding of the University values, systems and practices as they relate to student affairs would be an asset
  • Excellent computer skills including experience using technical advising tools (such as student information systems like PeopleSoft, Elevate, and field placement systems) and Microsoft applications (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
