Description

The Animal Resource Centre in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Core Support Technician for approximately 6 months.

Reporting to the Manager, Core Support.  The Core Support Technician will support the highest degree of sanitation or sterilization to prevent disease transmission to animals. This position requires operation and monitoring of large specialized laboratory animal care equipment; organization, cleaning and ensuring provision of available equipment and materials, including caging, bottles, feed, linens and other supplies. Cleaning 1,500 to 3,000 cages per day (7,500 per week) as well as 15,000 other items of equipment per week is required, as well as providing general housekeeping to maintain the facilities disease free, or for disease control purposes.

There is a high physical demand for heavy lifting and standing for long periods of time in a hot humid environment. Work is fast paced with shifting priorities and often tight deadlines. There is a high degree of repetitive work.

May be at risk for developing allergies.

Standard work hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Ensures high degree of cleanliness in the washing, preparation, and sterilizing of facility equipment, eg. cages, bottles, linens
  • Operate, clean and monitor specialized equipment, according to manufacturer`s recommendation eg. rack washers, tunnel washers, autoclaves, within safety guidelines and with proper use of chemicals as required
  • Report maintenance requirements in a timely manner
  • Operate University vehicles with appropriate care, follow legal requirements as well, keep vehicle clean and report any maintenance concerns in a timely manner
  • Maintain a high level of safety and cleanliness in procedures at all times, adhering to safety procedures and sanitary standards
  • Work well as a member of a team or independently as required always demonstrating good judgement, effective problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Identify to supervisor any requirements for supplies, major equipment repairs, problem solving assistance or processes for improvement of efficiency
  • Assist in teaching and coaching new staff members
  • Allocating staff and resources during staff absences
  • Ensure that all communication with staff, users of the facility and all others encountered in performance of duties, is done in a positive, helpful and friendly manner
  • Demonstrate flexibility in order to assist in other areas as required

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Minimum High School Diploma with background and/or work experience in operation and maintenance of large industrial equipment
  • High physical demand for heavy lifting and standing for long periods of time in a hot humid environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently or as a member of 
  • Background in operation, monitoring, maintenance and repair of equipment, including large industrial equipment, within safety guidelines
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals required in operation of equipment and facilities sanitation
  • Basic understanding of sanitation and sterilization principles and techniques an asset
  • Valid Awareness of safety and good practices associated with operation of a motor vehicle and posses a valid Alberta driver's license
  • Demonstrated skills in time management and ability to prioritize work
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated strong personal effectiveness skills
