Description

The UCalgary Continuing Education Downtown Campus is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time General Maintenance and Facilities Worker.

This position reports to the Facilities and Technology Manager. Daily tasks and work assignments will be distributed and supervised by the Facilities Team Lead. This position requires work be carried out with the following conditions: within confined spaces, heavy lifting, year-round indoor responsibilities, and limited outdoor responsibilities.

The intended hours of work for this recurring part-time position are Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., but depending on the needs of the campus, these hours may be adjusted at any given time. Overtime may be required, and the incumbent might be expected to be on standby. The position may also require to work on Main Campus to support facilities projects from time to time. 

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Ensures the work assigned is completed as required and is following the University specifications, standards and procedures
  • Perform day-to-day maintenance, painting, and repairs required for a public, mixed-use student/rental facility.
  • Complete setups and teardowns for classrooms, and special events. This can include dismantling of tables, chairs, staging and podiums.
  • In the absence of the AV/Media Technician, maintain and troubleshoot classroom computer and projector equipment..
  • Complete maintenance work that does not require trade certification including, but not limited to carpentry, flooring, door hardware, painting, minor plumbing, furniture movement and repair, door/lock repair, and general maintenance work.
  • Loading dock organization and cleanliness; servery equipment sanitizing and routine maintenance; and maintaining the organization and cleanliness of storage areas are required.
  • Willingness to learn all existing University structures and systems, as well as acquire knowledge of new trends, techniques, codes and equipment as they become relevant to the operation of the campus.
  • Ensures that equipment, workspaces, and tools supplied by the University are used for their intended purposes and are maintained in a safe working order.
  • Provide customer service to internal teams according to university and departmental standards and expectations by pleasantly and respectfully interacting with co-workers, university staff, contractors, consultants, suppliers, students and other members of the university community
  • Participate in own training and development in coordination with the department and is willing to learn and adapt to change.
  • Meets all ongoing OHS initiatives, follows University OHS policies, procedures and OHS Legislation as required, ensuring personal, public and co-worker safety when completing tasks or engaging in potentially hazardous situations.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Minimum 2 years experience in a facility, customer service or retail related position. 
  • Non-certified general facility maintenance experience would be an asset.
  • Physical strength and stamina and be able to lift heavy items (up to 25 kilograms).
  • Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials, year-round indoor and outdoor responsibilities and controlled hazardous environments.
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time as well as be able to work in cramped positions.
  • Mechanical aptitude and proven ability to use hand and power tools, to work on ladders at various heights, and demonstrate a safety-conscious attitude.
  • Ability and willing to work in a variety of environments, including office settings, classrooms, computer labs, storage and event spaces.
  • Proven record of being able to work independently with minimal supervision to complete tasks assigned in a timely manner and have ability to handle multiple demands and competing priorities.
  • Strong ability to take direction and supervision from the Facilities Team Lead and the Facilities and Technology Manager.
  • Comfortable working with others in a team environment including mentoring and sharing knowledge with co-workers.
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented and have ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office suite including word, e-mail, mobile communication devices.
  • A valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
