Description

The Department of Paediatrics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a PEMRAP Program Lead.  This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The  PEMRAP (Pediatric Emergency Medicine Research Assistant Program) Program Lead will report to PEMRAP Medical Director.

This position will be located at the Alberta Children's Hospital (ACH).  Occasional regional, provincial, national travel for research meetings will be required. Workdays vary in length and occasionally include evening and weekend hours.

PEMRAP is a highly successful year-round research program empowering university students and recent graduates to gain experience in medical research; exceptional mentorship skills are therefore essential for this position. The PEMRAP Program Lead will supervise up to 55 students each session (3 sessions per annum); as such, a passion for training/coaching the next generation of highly qualified personnel is expected. PEMRAP students screen, consent and enroll patients for multiple studies being conducting in the Emergency Department and perform other research assistant duties as required.

Working conditions may at times require exposure to various hazardous materials and substances.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Provide oversight and vision for the current and future/long term role and function of PEMRAP
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders including study principal investigators and study coordinators to develop and implement protocols, policies and processes for all PEMRAP studies in the ACH ED and provide recommendations for improvement/change as needed. This includes collaboration with local UCalgary investigators from across multiple departments (Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Community Health Sciences, Surgery, Psychology etc.), as well as national and international investigators leading Pediatric Emergency Research Canada (PERC), Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN - USA) and Pediatric Emergency Research Network (PERN, multi-national) studies
  • Collaborate with Alberta Health Services (AHS) Research Services to optimize PEMRAP research policies and processes within the ACH ED
  • Collaborate with AHS Volunteer Services to meet all requirements for student members
  • Provide oversight of PEMRAP team and participate  in the selection of up to 55 undergraduate/graduate trainees each term
  • Provide feedback to the student members to develop relevant research skills; identify those individuals requiring further support, and provide letters of recommendation as applicable
  • Manage the PEMRAP team infrastructure used for day-to-day activities, including the development of program standardized policies and procedures, PEMRAP website, and student intake process maintaining program records etc.
  • Oversee the selection of new PEMRAP student members (volunteers)
  • Oversee/Approve PEMRAP Scheduling
  • Oversee PEMRAP Orientation sessions
  • Liaise with Emergency Department clinical staff regarding PEMRAP matters
  • Maintain an active role in the PERT Research Steering Committee meetings
  • Evaluate the success of the PEMRAP program, produce an annual report and provide recommendations for improvement/change

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree required, a postgraduate degree is preferred but a combination of education and experience will be considered
  • 5-7 years of work experience is required
  • Minimum of 5 years in a supervisory position is required
  • 3-5 years of project management is required
  • Certification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and research practices (TCPS2) are required
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Leadership skills, including demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, managing complex problems, coaching, teaching and conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, inspire and build confidence in others to achieve common goals
  • Experience working with students or training employees preferred
  • Experience in a clinical setting or a clinical research program setting preferred
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills on goals
  • Proven ability to work independently, to set own priorities and deadlines, and to be accountable for delivery of service
  • Experience developing and documenting program policies and procedures
  • Proficient working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite and research-specific databases, specifically Word, Excel, and RedCAP
  • Excellent understanding of UCalgary environment (policies, procedures and standards), including IRISS, eFIN etc.
  • Ability to collaborate on contractual/financial/budgetary aspects of research projects and the PEMRAP program operations
