Description
SSE Operations Staff within the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Manager, Research & Inclusion for approximately 17 months.
Reporting to the Manager of Dean's Office Operations, Schulich School of Engineering, the Manager, Research & Inclusion, is responsible for the management of the Dean's Office Research & Awards team and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion portfolio. Additionally, this role will provide advisory and administrative support to the Dean's Office leadership team, including the Dean, Associate Deans, and Director of Business Operations. The Manager, Research & Inclusion directly supervises approximately 5 full time support staff.
This position operates on a regular work week schedule (Monday to Friday) with occasional variances in start and end time, and may be expected to attend events or provide service outside normal working hours. This position is primarily on-campus, in-person with the possibility of one remote day per week when operationally feasible
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Strategic
- Provides strategic expertise and leadership to support strategic research & innovation, EDIA and prizes and awards projects initiated by the Office leadership team.
- Researches and composes documents, proposals, reports, policy and customized documents for the Dean's Office leadership team.
- Consult with the Associate Dean (Research) in the development and enactment of a long-range strategic plan for supporting Faculty grant applications and research with the goal to increase the number and dollar value of successful research funding awards across SSE.
- Make recommendations to the Associate Dean (Research) regarding strategic operations of the SSE Research.
- Develop implement and analyze diversity and inclusivity initiatives by staying up to date on relevant data and trends, organizing outreach initiatives targeting underrepresented groups, as well as internal initiatives aimed at building a diverse community in the school.
- Develop evaluation and tracking procedures that collect results-based data over the long term in order to enable holistic assessment of the effectiveness of projects, events and activities.
- Represent the Schulich School of Engineering on committees and at events internal and external to the University of Calgary to build support, grow partnerships, and bring back best practices from other organizations.
- Maintain open lines of communication with all stakeholders, raising issues with Senior Leadership as needed.
- Provide strategic support for the Momentum Directors.
Program and Team Management
- Lead the planning, development, implementation, maintenance and evaluation of research and innovation, EDIA and prizes and awards projects.
- Maintains an efficient, amiable, well-organized team that offers quality service to its clients.
- Managerial discretion for direct reports, including but not limited to, recruitment, performance management, and discipline up to and including termination.
- Supports staff through daily interactions, positive feedback, coaching and evaluations.
- Ensures all stakeholders of the Schulich School of Engineering are treated with respect and any concerns or ideas are dealt with in a timely and courteous manner.
- Ensures all confidential and sensitive information is handled in an appropriate manner.
- Advises the Dean's Office leadership team on operational matters and works proactively to assemble background information, as well as details on procedures and timelines.
- Ensures work conforms to University and Schulich School of Engineering structure, governance and decision making processes as per faculty and university policies and guidelines.
- Work closely with various functional leaders to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the larger team.
- Collaborates and prioritizes deadlines to ensure efficiency in the Research and Innovation, EDIA and Prizes and Awards portfolios.
- Keeps the Dean's Office leadership team informed of relevant School/University plans, activities, dates and deadlines, etc.
- Oversees collection and retention of business critical data, such as data required for tracking and analyzing EDI admissions trends, and/or evaluating research programs.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Post-secondary degree in Engineering, Science, Business, Social Sciences or a complimentary field.
- Three or more years of related experience in a supervisory role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of Research & Innovation administration and best practices in Canada.
- Demonstrated knowledge of EDI, accessibility and human rights policies and provincial/federal legislation and best practices.
- Previous experience with financial management and budget operations is desired.
- Technical expertise and knowledge of complex University systems processes is considered to be a strong asset.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to draft clear, concise correspondence.
- Strong quantitative ability, including the ability to organize, analyze, summarize, and present complex data using spreadsheet software and similar tools.
- Ability to act decisively, to exercise a high-degree of initiative and judgment on a wide range of issues.
- Must be able to think logically and be critically objective with an ability to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
- Proven organizational skills with an ability to set priorities and complete multiple tasks within specified timelines.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work both independently and as part of a team within a large, complex, dynamic, and sophisticated organization.
- Demonstrated professionalism, tact and maturity in handling highly sensitive and confidential information ethically and with discretion.
