Description
Treasury and Investments within Finance is currently seeking two Full-time Regular Portfolio Managers.
Reporting to the Director of Treasury & Investments, the Portfolio Manager works with complex finance, treasury, banking, and investment systems and processes while maintaining a portfolio of external investment managers and/or strategies utilizing quantitative, qualitative and interpersonal skills.
The Portfolio Manager demonstrates the ability to work in a high volume environment with frequent interruptions, ambiguity and changing priorities and is required to manage their own time and hours of work to ensure deliverables are completed on a timely basis, while successfully meeting the needs of various parties.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Portfolio Management
- Management of potential and existing investment manager relationships and leading searches for new managers, investment consultants and external legal counsel.
- Risk management, compliance and reporting for the investment portfolio.
- Regularly meet with investment managers and track their progress.
- Responsible for oversight of external managers and consultants.
- Address manager compliance concerns with the university's investment policies.
- Lead transitions between managers or mandates.
- Support reviews of the university's asset mix.
- Lead implementation of new investment strategies.
- Recommend benchmarks for new asset classes or evaluate the appropriateness of externally recommended benchmarks.
- Responsible for developing investment reports to assist management and the Investment Committee in decision making.
- Ensures that risks to the university's investments are properly addressed/escalated.
- Perform due diligence and monitor and report on changes in external investment manager personnel, process or strategy.
- Compare existing managers to similar mandates and market indices.
- Review attribution analysis and report on drivers of underperformance/outperformance by managers.
- Responds to, reviews and analyzes results of endowment surveys.
- Ensure blended returns for endowed and non endowed funds are verified monthly and quarterly with any discrepancies addressed and resolved.
- Research and monitor best practices and trends in the investment industry.
People Management and Other Responsibilities
- Hire and train direct report(s)
- Ensure effective policies, procedures and systems are in place that ensure best practices are followed.
- Set goals, monitor, and evaluate performance of direct report.
- Ensure the unit meets or exceeds internal/external stakeholder expectations.
- Maintain proper and accurate records in relation to investment mandates including regular updates to reports and/or procedure manuals.
- Proactively research emerging tools for investment management.
- Provide Auditors with relevant information regarding investment accounts and external managers particularly over year-end.
- Provide support and analysis related to technology, policies, process and controls that are needed to support the University of Calgary's investment activities.
Communications
- Proactively develop and maintain respectful, trustworthy, productive, problem-solving working relationships with colleagues, staff, line managers and external consultants.
- Communications are timely, informative, confidential and appropriately tailored to the level of the end user.
- Regularly meet with external investment managers to evaluate investment options and strategies for endowed and non-endowed funds.
- Communicate effectively and appropriately with custodians, consultants and investment advisors.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation with a University degree in Finance, Economics or Accounting or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Significant work experience in finance and investments (5-8 years).
- Knowledge of, and experience with, alternative /private market investments (private equity, hedge funds, infrastructure, private credit, real estate) strongly preferred.
- Aware of global best practices in investment management.
- Strong understanding of major asset classes and financial securities markets, both short-term and long-term, and their correlation characteristics.
- Solid working knowledge of the University of Calgary's core business systems would be an asset.
- Executes strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy required.
- Strong systems skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.
- Developed investigative and analytical skills with a focus on process improvement.
- Must be able to take initiative and work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
- Able to think critically and act logically to evaluate situations and generate required steps to ensure success.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and superior organizational skills.
- Leadership skills and experience would be valuable.
