Area:  Black Child Mental Health

Duration:   1 year with possibility of extension 

Start Date:   April 1, 2025

Salary:   $60,000 $CAD per annum, plus University of Calgary Plan C health benefits

The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Black Child Mental Health.

The postdoctoral Scholar must be able to work in person five days a week onsite in Calgary. The applicant must also be able to travel across sites.

Application to postdoctoral scholarships, such as CIHR and SSHRC award will be expected.

Job Description:

  • Assist Principal Investigator in the design and development of research project
  • Engage with Black communities
  • Recruit participants for the study
  • Collect interview and focus group data
  • Analyze data including with NVivo qualitative data analysis software
  • Develop and submit research proposals
  • Apply advanced theoretical and/or analytical techniques
  • Write papers for publication
  • Develop presentations for events, conferences and other knowledge mobilization products
  • Manage ethics submissions, modifications and renewals
  • Mentor and train research assistants and graduate student
  • Organize and co-facilitate conversation cafes
  • Develop data collection instruments including interview instruments
  • Conduct literature reviews, literature search, scoping review, and systematic review
  • Recruit research participants
  • Manage project documentation including protocol development, project planning, evaluation, and reporting
  • Assist with research data management
  • Coordinate and participate in community and stakeholder engagement sessions
  • Attend research team meetings
  • The individual may also coordinate and engage in research activities that broadly improves the lives of Black people in Canada
     

Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in health sciences, social science, education or related field
  • PhD must have been awarded within the last seven years
  • Experience working on research projects with Black communities in Canada
  • Track record of journal publications
  • Outstanding writing and communication skills
  • Strong motivation to submit papers for publication in peer reviewed journals
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex qualitative analysis
  • Indepth theoretical knowledge of intersectionality theory and/or critical race theory
  • Indepth knowledge of child mental health
  • Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate student
  • Advanced software and database experience required with proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with NVivo will be required
  • Experience with: participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis, developing and maintaining ethics applications, writing manuscripts and reports, assisting with grants and funding applications
  • Experience with qualitative research activities: developing interview guides; conducting interviews and focus groups; transcription and data analysis
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex research project
  • Track record of building positive relationship with Black and racialized communities is required
  • High level of effective time management, personal initiative, and teamwork
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, organization, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Able to recognize and resolve routine problems in the research process
  • Bilingual applicants (English and French) will be prioritized in the selection process
