Postdoctoral Scholar position

Area: Energy System Modelling and Analysis 

Duration: One year, with possibility of renewal 

Start date: Immediate

Salary: $60,000 CAD per year, plus a comprehensive benefits package

The Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for one (1) Postdoctoral Scholar focusing on building a Canadian energy system optimization model using the TEMOA modelling framework. The Postdoctoral Scholar will be housed in the Department of Civil Engineering.
They will be part of an interdisciplinary team working to assess the role of chemical fuels (e.g., hydrogen, synthetic fuels) in meeting Canada¿s 2050 net-zero goal by developing a Canadian energy system model (CANOE). 

Job Description:

The successful applicant will focus on development of the energy system model and expanding the industrial representation in the model to improve the interconnectivity between industrial sectors in the CANOE model. They will work closely with project investigators with interdisciplinary backgrounds from engineering, public policy,economics, and law, and will have the opportunity to mentor graduate(PhD and MSc) students working on applying the energy system model to evaluate decarbonization options in different sectors.

The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewable for a second year, contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, climate science,environmental science, physics,economics or relatedfield awarded and will have demonstrated skills in energy system modelling or systems-level assessments. Clear interest in interdisciplinary work in the area should be expressed in the cover letter.

In addition, the candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • The candidate must have been awarded a PhD or equivalent within the five years immediately preceding the start date of this posting.
  • Experience with energy system modelling frameworks (e.g., TEMOA, OSeMOSYS, TIMES) and methods preferred.
  • Experience researching within the industrial sector in the field of life cycle assessment or technoeconomic assessment is considered an asset.
  • Strong written communication skills, preferably demonstrated by writing peer-review publications and technical reports.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary group involving students and faculty from a range of backgrounds, as well as external stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Efficient organizational and time management skills in setting priorities and accomplishing tasks within deadlines.
